Most of the stages and venues are within walking distance.\n\n\n Emmet Cohen Trio \n\n\nWe caught the Twin Cities Jazz Festival last June 2025 and said\, “On a balmy summer evening in downtown St. Paul the Twin Cities Jazz Festival kicked off its 27th year. Earlier in the week the Star and Tribune noted that the TCJF is bigger than the Taste of Minnesota and boasts more musical acts than the Minnesota Yacht Club. In fact\, there were over eighty artists playing 20 venues over two days and a lot of it was free. So\, it was my intention to catch five of these acts at Mears Park.”\n\nSocial Share\n Share on Add Us (Opens in new window)\n Add Us\n \n Share on Instagram (Opens in new window)\n Instagram\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window)\n Bluesky\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n More\n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n \n Share on Reddit (Opens in new window)\n Reddit\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on Threads (Opens in new window)\n Threads\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window)\n Mastodon\n \n Share on Telegram (Opens in new window)\n Telegram\n \n Share on Nextdoor (Opens in new window)\n Nextdoor\n Like this:Like Loading…

SUMMARY:Mpls: Kelly Doyle at Berlin (July 25\, 2026)
DESCRIPTION:Kelly Doyle has signed to Strolling Bones Records and will release Thieves on August 14\, 2026. The 9-track set was produced and mixed by Steve Christensen (Khruangbin\, Steve Earle) and features Doyle on guitar\, Will Story on bass\, Jeremy Bruch on drums\, and Nelson Deveraux on saxophone. Recorded in his hometown of Houston\, TX\, and after many years in the ambient sphere\, the new album ends a sort of wilderness period for the musician. With Thieves\, he pivots back to the guitar centered in an instrumental album that takes root in jazzier terrain with a radiant energy. \nSeveral Kelly Doyles have been floating around Houston for years. He’s as likely to be found playing guitar while leading a jazz trio in a late night setting as he is adding colorful flourishes in support of a singer-songwriter\, a honky tonk performer\, or a lounge act. Doyle’s guitar tone will sound familiar to those who know his work\, but the way he applies it to the music is thoughtful\, melodic\, and playful. He has long played well with others\, adding bright lines to the retro lounge of Clouseaux and\, later\, wild old-school honky tonk solos with Robert Ellis. He’s also played with Phosphorescent\, Craig Finn\, What Made Milwaukee Famous\, been prominently featured on Khruangbin’s Late Night Tales\, and more. Plug Doyle in and he can play with just about any act. \nToday\, Magnet Magazine premiered a live performance of the album’s first single\, “Bats Are Cute.” Playful exotica meets psychedelic jazz\, the song starts light and quirky\, then veers into Bitches Brew-inspired improvisation. Doyle says\, “This is a song directly inspired by the rhythmic quality found in Martin Denny’s Exotica record. It is something I can’t seem to shake. I love the sounds of 50s exotica. Pairing that with the Miles Davis Bitches Brew / Live-Evil era panning effects over the improvising created a really nice mood. It made the exotica side of the song less campy and more creepy.” Filmed at Ovations in Houston\, the performance was directed by Javier Fernandez with cinematography by Vincent Briseno. See it HERE. \nWhen Doyle found his way back to the guitar\, he found himself listening to a lot of Grant Green\, the storied guitarist associated with jazz\, but whose recordings grew ever more expansive during his career. Green’s approach to guitar in the ‘60s and ‘70s led to a posthumous renown as many of his guitar parts would find second lives as hip-hop samples. With Thieves\, Doyle has similarly put his compositional skill to work\, with pieces that don’t showcase his instrument so much as they nestle it into compositions that unfold over the course of five minutes to leave lingering impressions. “I really don’t think of it as jazz at all\,” Doyle says. “I know it’s a necessary descriptor that you have to use. But I think of it as just part of a trajectory of things I dig.” Those things also include the work of Lloyd Green\, the late\, great Nashville A-Team session player whose pedal steel work is echoed by some of Doyle’s warping string bends\, the dark\, immersive sounds of ambient/electronic composer Tim Hecker\, and the reverb-rich sound of fellow Telecaster master Danny Gatton\, who\, like Doyle\, could play a country session and a jazz session back to back. \nThe compositions on Thieves are concise. “I wanted the melodies to be strong\,” he says. “There’s a thing with some modern jazz where it feels like people are on stage kissing their muscles. I don’t care for that. It doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy shredding. But I also like intention and purpose. I think compared to my other records\, this one sounds less manicured. A little freer\, a little looser. But I wanted to focus on the melodies and rein in everything else.” \nThe album will be available across streaming platforms\, compact disc\, and standard black vinyl. Thieves is available for pre-order NOW via STROLLING BONES RECORDS. \nThieves Track Listing: \n1. Thieves\n2. Pink Houses\n3. Cold Open\n4. Needlerooser\n5. A Year and a Day\n6. Big Fish\n7. SUMMARY:Mpls: Laura Veirs at Cedar Cultural Center (Oct 17\, 2026)
DESCRIPTION:In 2014 k.d. lang sent an email to Neko Case and Laura Veirs on a whim. In celebration\, a new 10th anniversary edition will be released on September 4 with the previously unreleased track “Accidental Tattoo” and 12 live versions of each other’s songs that were recorded during the original 2016 tour. Pre-order on metallic orange swirl vinyl\, limited to a pressing of 500\, in the Anti- Records webstore. Listen to “Accidental Tattoo” below. \nListen to “Accidental Tattoo”: https://youtu.be/sbPWGxR2BSQ \n“ “Accidental Tattoo” is a song that came from a sudden creative spark that happened between all 3 of us a couple of years ago\,” lang explains. “Neko wrote the lyrics\, Laura and I organized Neko’s poetry\, adding arrangements and intertwining it with melodies and music. And then I worked closely with Larry Goldings on the actual production to fasten all of it into the song you hear now.” \nAdded Veirs: “So much in the world has changed since this album first came out in 2016\, but when I listen back\, these songs still hold up to my ears. I’m proud of what we made together and am thankful for the opportunity to have been part of it. The experience challenged me\, taught me a great deal\, and ultimately helped shape the artist I am today.” \nFull of stunning harmonies and spellbinding rhythms\, ‘case/lang/veirs’ draws inspiration from alluring\, mysterious subjects: a supermoon\, the tumbledown story of 70s singer Judee Sill\, and the “best kept secret” in Silver Lake\, to name but three. It’s a true collaboration between “the strongest voices in their field – lang the full-voiced seductress\, Case the hurricane\, and Veirs the wry storyteller” (Pitchfork). The women wrote all 14 songs and shared lead vocals equally\, sometimes even within the same track. Full of stunning harmonies and spellbinding rhythms\, ‘case/lang/veirs’ travels through aches and eras\, torch songs and tributes to the undersung. \nThey worked over two and a half years in Portland\, Oregon\, where lang and Veirs both live\, sometimes in lang’s loft with a view of Mount St. Helens\, others in Veirs’ dining room or backyard studio. The album was written from the ground up without any real plan beyond a desire to make music together and a faith that it would reveal itself. “There’s a generosity of spirit to ‘case/lang/veirs’\,” NPR praised upon the album’s release. “A worthy extension of three tremendous catalogs\, in which three great singer-songwriters sound enhanced and invigorated by the challenge of living up to each other’s legacies.” \nLast month Veirs announced her 14th solo album\, ‘Temple Songs’\, coming out August 14th. The first album Veirs has written\, recorded\, arranged\, produced and performed entirely on her own\, listen to the lead single “Flying Into Darkness” HERE. This September she will be touring the UK and Ireland with Karl Blau\, then setting off on a US headlining run in early October. All of her upcoming dates are listed below. \nNeko Case released her ninth studio album ‘Neon Grey Midnight Green’ last fall\, simultaneously her biggest-sounding and most intimate-feeling album yet. More “in the room” than any of her past work\, even breaths and shirt-sleeve rustlings were kept in the final mix as a reminder that “humans were here.” Last week she announced a new run of ‘Neon Grey Midnight Green’ tour dates that begin this fall on the East coast and end with two shows in Case’s hometown of Tacoma\, Washington. All upcoming dates are listed below. \nCase is also the composer and lyricist for the forthcoming stage adaptation of Thelma & Louise: A New Musical\, having been personally selected by original screenwriter Callie Khouri to create the score and songs. The production will make its world premiere this fall at The Young Vic in London\, running from September 3 through October 24. SUMMARY:Jax: The Runarounds at FIVE (June 20\, 2026)
DESCRIPTION:The Runarounds at FIVE (June 20\, 2026)\n\n\nJune 20\, 2026 Saturday The Runarounds\nat FIVEfivejax.com\n\nAmerican rock band The Runarounds will be headlining FIVE\, in Jacksonville\, on June 20\, 2026\, as part of their Minivan Tour.\n\n\n The Runarounds at First Avenue (Feb 6\, 2026) \n\nWe saw the band earlier in Feb 2026 and said\, “Headliners The Runarounds were up next. Formed in 2021\, the band was not originally supposed to perform at First Avenue\, but at nearby Fine Line. Having blown off the doors on sales\, they got promoted to the main stage (very nearly filling it to capacity)\, and the excitement from the crowd was palpable. In a very modern day turn of events\, The Runarounds have landed a serious following through their TV series on Amazon Prime that features them in a mix of real and fictional situations and characters\, but highlights their music throughout. The quintet (vocals/guitar\, guitar/vocals\, guitar\, bass\, and drums) came to stage and the crowd erupted. With multiple singers\, the band hit with a wave of sound with all those voices and guitars. Sophia was super charged and had band and audience all hyped up. After the first bit of banter\, including the note of being in the iconic venue\, they rolled into 15 Rootbeers\, with the crowd singing along in full voice. Crossroads was a new song and had some nice bright guitar riffs to nearly be in pop rock mode. The alternating lead vocalists even within a song was a nice effect for The Runarounds\, and it created a change of pace throughout. When Beautiful Stranger started\, I was unsure who was louder on vocals\, but the crowd might have been winning. Perhaps it’s because of their experience on the TV show\, but the band’s repartee with the crowd was easy going and humorous and continued to reward the audience.”\nThe Runarounds – Minivan Tour 2026\n\nJune 6 – Little Rock\, AR – The Hall\nJune 7 – Oklahoma City\, OK – Tower Theatre\nJune 10 – New Orleans\, LA – The Fillmore\nJune 11 – Branson\, MS – City Hall Live\nJune 13 – Manchester\, TN – Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival\nJune 16 – Dothan\, AL – The Plant\nJune 18 – St. Petersburg\, FL – Jannus Live\nJune 19 – Orlando\, FL – House of Blues \nJune 20 – Jacksonville\, FL – FIVE\nJune 21 – Greensboro\, NC – The Pyrle \n \n\n\nSocial Share\n Share on Add Us (Opens in new window)\n Add Us\n \n Share on Instagram (Opens in new window)\n Instagram\n \n Share on X (Opens in new window)\n X\n \n Share on Bluesky (Opens in new window)\n Bluesky\n \n Share on Facebook (Opens in new window)\n Facebook\n More\n Print (Opens in new window)\n Print\n \n Share on Reddit (Opens in new window)\n Reddit\n \n Email a link to a friend (Opens in new window)\n Email\n \n Share on Pinterest (Opens in new window)\n Pinterest\n \n Share on Tumblr (Opens in new window)\n Tumblr\n \n Share on Threads (Opens in new window)\n Threads\n \n Share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)\n WhatsApp\n \n Share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)\n LinkedIn\n \n Share on Mastodon (Opens in new window)\n Mastodon\n \n Share on Telegram (Opens in new window)\n Telegram\n \n Share on Nextdoor (Opens in new window)\n Nextdoor\n Like this:Like Loading…
