Just a weird thing\, but the band took their name from a Velvet Underground song “All Tomorrow’s Parties”\, so I’ve always thought they were a Lou Reed cover lover band.\n\n\nThe Petty collective features a rotating cast of players\, but is known to include: JT Bates\, James Diers\, Jake Hanson\, Jeremy Hanson\, Bryan Nichols\, and Rob Skoro.\n\n \nHemma at 7th Street Entry (Aug 1\, 2024)\n\n\nFaith Boblett will open the first night (Dec 26)\, while Hemma will open the second night (Dec 27). \n\n\nWe first saw Hemma in August 2024 and noted\, “Opening the show was local singer/songwriter Hemma\, who sings about grief and healing and seems to be inspired by Joni Mitchell. Her biography mentioned that she comes from a large family of singers and sometimes she’s with a full band (but it seems easier for traveling as a soloist). Songs that she played and mentioned were “Patterns” (with the funky beats)\, “Home”\, and “Buckskin Pony” (which she had to not use the pre-recorded background music). All their songs are family-friendly\, including the “Rollercoaster” and “Who Farted?”. And being at the Taste of Minnesota\, they perfectly ended their set with “All I Eat Is Pizza.” These guys (Bryan & Neil) are great\, we’ve always loved them ever since catching them live in Nov 2009. Rudh is well known for his weekly show of the same name on The Current radio station\, as well as throughout the Twin Cities night club scene. The set up is a familiar one for those who have seen Rudh before. Doors open as he gets started\, sliding between songs with the videos on the large screen\, while Rudh controls everything from the booth at the back of the second floor. With a focus on New Wave\, British Invasion\, and similar genres\, Rudh weaves a continuous mix of danceable music. That made for a stripped-down sound\, but an effective one for the setting. With three different guitars\, Kiernan started off acoustic for the first several numbers. Kiernan’s plaintive vocals created an intimate setting for the early evening crowd. Kiernan let us know that the first two songs were currently unreleased. A bit of banter had Kiernan talking about songwriters who have inspired her and led to a cover of an Adrianne Lenker song\, anything. Getting into some of the music the band has released\, I was struck at how well they lent themselves to a solo interpretation. They have eight albums and I suggest 2013’s Rising Tide as an excellent entry to their work. The quartet (vocals/guitar\, guitar/vocals/keyboards\, bass\, and drums) came out strong\, with Smith and Pony’s harmonies instantly compelling. Puzzle Missing Pieces was a great alt rock sound\, with Ron Caron’s drums truly dominant. The R&B/dance group features singer Via Rosa and DJ/beats Na’el Shehade. This was the band’s first time in Minneapolis\, and they love it. The story that Rosa told about their secret origin as a band was that Shehade was working as owner/manager of three restaurants\, but he had always had a passion for being creative. Dean Johnson looks (at least from 200-feet) like he could’ve just stepped off of a horse he had ridden in from Wyoming. You know\, tired\, thirsty and dusty. No wait\, I mean he looks like a cowboy\, yeah that’s it. Turns out he’s from Seattle\, the son of a powerful mayonnaise magnate from Camano Island\, who has spent the last 20 years tending bar and honing his craft. Reading the article in the link just above\, helped me appreciate some of his stage banter. It describes him as a perfectionist\, which puts his comments to the crowd about messing up a lyric or chord into context. I certainly didn’t notice any mistakes. Of course\, as I said\, he was new to me. Maybe everyone else was laughing to themselves about his mistakes. Why is everyone so mean? He has a really nice voice\, which tends towards falsetto at times. His songs are pure Americana and his accompanying band were all professionals; their sound was tight. I don’t have a complete setlist because he didn’t tell us the names of his songs\, just what they’re about\, and he played a new song so setlist.fm can’t help us. One song that stuck out for me was “So Much Better”\, which he told us is about the exaggerated effects of electroshock therapy on the song’s protagonist and its set to a lovely tune. The band played for about 45 minutes and did themselves proud. They were an opening band worth seeing. Thanks\, Mr. Johnson. I hope you enjoy the ride back to Wyoming.
