Their fanbase here is incredible\, and they just love the audience (which were mostly young college-bound or college students). There is something hopelessly romantic about the Paper Kites’ songs that speaks to their fans. In fact\, singer Sam Bentley said that they filmed two music videos in Minneapolis\, which would make them “practically Minnesotans”. They had enough songs to make for a full set from their two albums States and twelvefour\, and that meant no cover songs. They took out the banjo to play two songs\, starting with ‘Bloom’\, followed by ‘St Clarity’\, both songs were incredibly well-received. The band is a legendary band\, having been around since 1969. Throughout the years ‘the Gang’ has changed\, with mostly new members joining in the early 2000’s as older members retired or died (Kool Bell’s brother Ronald Bell died in 2020). Robert “Kool” Bell is keeping the legacy alive\, and the band had him step into the spotlight to say a few words. Kool said that when they first started\, in the 1960s\, they didn’t know what to call themselves. They had so many band names\, including Soul Town Band and The Flames… but they had to change their name\, because James Brown objected (Brown’s band was called the Famous Flames). Eventually\, as history would have it\, they settled on Kool and the Gang.
