I survived with my mind intact but only because I spent most of the show watching them reflected in my shiny shield. I have been to scores of shows at First Ave and I would not describe First Ave as a particularly effects-heavy venue. This show\, in support of their latest self-titled album Purity Ring (Fellowship record label 26 September 2025)\, broke that mold. The music and the display were top notch. My pictures are not going to do it justice\, but it was really impressive. Fireworks followed by tranquil images and back to different flavors of pyrotechnics were on the menu for the show. The music perfectly fit the visual performance. There was not a lot of stage banter but\, they expressed their love and gratitude for Minneapolis as well as their appreciation for playing with yuniVERSE. The highlights of the show for me were “pink lightning”\, “glacier ::inmemory of rs::\, iamanocean\, and Begin Again. I have to admit that I appreciate that they didn’t bother with an encore. She had a 2019 album\, This Secret\, and supporting it had many of the challenges of those released near the start of the pandemic. Hunt was performing alongside Jules Stewart on the tour. With Hunt on guitar and Stewart on drums\, the pair started with the song Lilacs (in June). It’s worth pointing out right away\, Hunt is a great singer; a strong alto with that Irish accent playing softly on her folk singer ways. Between the Pines\, the first track off of This Secret\, was a lovely number\, and the lyrics “with California on my mind” makes more sense knowing Stewart lives in San Diego. And when they returned for the second half\, it was with songs from their latest album like “Picture Perfect Life”\, “Skipping Stones” and “I’m the Lucky One.” Then earlier songs like “Jazz Man” and “Two Lane Highway” as well as forays from the 80’s with “Goodbye So Long” and “Let Me Love You Tonight.” It was a pleasant evening of music from a band who deftly blended songs from past members as well as songs of their own. But Harper finally mentioned what was on everyone’s mind. “If we don’t do this. Clarke played a lot of tunes from his latest self-titled album\, which is actually his third album. His debut album\, called Hollow Ground was a big hit on Metacritic (thanks to Pitchfork leading the positive review). With the new self-titled album\, Clarke mentioned that he was inspired by The Beach Boys (Brian Wilson) four-and five-part harmonies\, so the record comes across feeling like it was written in the 60s. You can certainly pick up the influence when you hear them play “Ballad of the Texas King” live on stage\, with the jangle harmony.”\n\n Tchotchke \n\nTchotchke to open. We saw Tchotchke in April 2023 when they were first in the city: “Opening the show was New York’s Tchotchke (formerly Pinky Pinkyl from Los Angeles). The all-girls trio features singer and drummer Anastasia Sanchez\, bassist Eva Chambers\, and guitarist Emily Tooraen. This was their last week with King Tuff\, and they were sad to leave the tour. They recounted that they’ve been on the road with Tuff for what seemed like five weeks already…. Maybe it’s their first time in the Twin Cities\, but they were curious if Minnesotans ever “get cold?” Anastasia continues\, “I mean\, it’s cold here and you guys get snow.” They are referring to the fact that we were hit with a snow storm the previous night\, resulting in four or five inches of snow on the ground. Moctar is from Niger and his brand of music is Tuareg Rock aka Desert Blues\, a sound that we have seen before in musicians like Bombino\, the great Vieux Farka Touré and even Moctar at First Ave in Mar 2022. There is not much similarity with the blues coming out of the Mississippi Delta and the Saharan Desert. Moctar has been compared to Jimi Hendrix\, but his guitar sounds more feral. There is a beat that runs through his songs\, like the train rhythm created by Johnny Cash.
