Three really good bands on the bill: Men At Work (from the land down under!), Toad the Wet Sprocket, and Japanese band Shonen Knife are playing the St. Augustine Amphitheatre, in St Augustine on July 17, 2026. I’ve previously mentioned that I find St Augustine too far for me to drive to see a show (it takes one hour to drive there and one hour to drive back). I really wish they can play closer to Jacksonville, but them’s the breaks when Jacksonville’s Daily’s Place is undergoing a two-year renovation project.

We recently saw Men at Work’s singer Colin Hays in Oct 2025 and wrote, “Hay was half comic routine and had the audience in stitches as he changed instruments. (Side note: I found it fascinating that Hay referred to “the old band” without generally naming Men At Work.) After a particularly rambling story (in the early going, he easily talked more than he played) he quipped, “thanks for letting me talk, I’ve spoken with nobody today”. The opening of Beautiful World got knowing cheers from the crowd, and that great lyric (“where a man can be free…or a woman if you are one”) put a smile on my face. Another switch of guitar, and a long tuning for the twelve strings came with the joke, “at least I’m not stoned, we’d never get out of here”. Goodnight Romeo was a tribute to his late father, and the flourish of the opening to the instrumental was pretty tremendous on that instrument and let Hay really show off his guitar skills.”
I’ve seen all these bands before, so they are all very good. I’m particularly interested in Shonen Knife. The group recently re-recorded Let’s Knife for the modern age… but unfortunately, they left off my favorite track, “Milky Way”. They explained that in order to fit songs on the album, they had to carefully reconsider which tracks to record. All the Japanese tracks are included, however for the instrumental (and American-only) track “Milky Way”, they decided to leave it off the re-recording. That did upset me, because, like I said, I love that song (because it’s not a typical Shonen Knife song) and to not have it on the new album was a bit of a crime, in my opinion. Hopefully, they can reissue it as a b-side in a future release.

■ Shonen KnifeShonen Knife is a Japanese pop-punk band formed in Osaka in 1981. Influenced by 1960s girl groups, pop bands, the Beach Boys, and early punk rock bands such as the Ramones, the band crafts stripped-down songs with simple yet unconventional lyrics sung in both Japanese and English.
Osaka trio Shonen Knife originally formed in 1981 and features sisters Naoko Yamano (guitars/vocals) and Atsuko Yamano (drums), plus their college friend Michie Nakatani (bass). Currently, the trio features the two sister and drummer Risa Kawano (from the band Brinky).
I’m happy to report that the trio decided to re-record their debut album Let’s Knife. The original album is long out of print and its songs are not on streaming… so, the band wanted to give fans an easier way to get that album, but now re-recorded with better production. The Let’s Knife Re-Cut comes out July 10, 2026.
Shonen Knife at Fine Line Music Cafe, Minneapolis (02 Oct 2019)
We saw Shonen Knife in Oct 2019 and wrote, “As we’ve previously mentioned, this is the closest we get to the original Shonen Knife, as original drummer Mana Nishiura died in a car accident in 1999. Since her death, the band took a break and Atsuko Yamano retired from the group. Atsuko would return to the group, because Ritsuko Taneda went on maternity leave. Since 2015, she’s been permanently part of the group (with current drummer Risa Kawano). As you can see from their setlist, they mostly sing songs about food (with ice cream being the theme to at least three songs). You would find out that the group enjoys cookies, ice cream, and green tea.”
