The Pretenders

It’s been nearly 40 years since The Pretenders emerged as a band, yet Chrissie Hynde’s voice still sounds the same as always; full of gravel, fire and soul. …

THE PRETENDERS

+ The Rails

State Theatre

You know we love The Pretenders. We reviewed their last album in November 2016 and said, “On this stellar new album, Chrissie Hynde transitions easily from rockers to ballads as guitars ring out with reverb, keyboards hum and pedal steel sounds its lonely cry like a train passing in the distance.”

If you show up early (these theatre shows starts and end on time), you get to see folk-rock royalty The Rails. The duo features Kami Thompson and James Walbourne. Thompson is from a rock family, as daughter of British folk rock singers Richard Thompson and Linda Thompson and her brother Teddy Thompson (who we just saw hanging out with Suzanne Vega in 2016). Walbourne played in various bands, including The Pretenders, Ray Davies, Edwyn Collins and, my personal favorites, The Pogues.

The Rails’ latest, Other People is available now on Psychonaut Sounds.
