Alt-rock trailblazer Matthew Sweet has announced his return to live touring following a nearly four-year hiatus, beginning with the pandemic and extending until now. The Midwest run will stop by the Turf Club, in St Paul, on February 16, 2024.

Matthew Sweet, with Gary Louris (10 July 2015)

We saw Matthew Sweet in 10 July 2015 and said, “Over at the PreferredOne Stage was Matthew Sweet with a full band: Paul Chastain on bass, Dennis Taylor on lead guitars, and Ric Menck on drums. The Sweet set was a real treat, with about half his set taken from his breakout 1991 Girlfriend album, including the title track, ‘Evangeline’, and ‘I’ve Been Waiting’.
The real highlight on his hour-long set was when Sweet invited The Jayhawks’ Gary Louris on stage to help jam out and provided backing vocals to the last four songs: ‘Divine Intervention’, “I’ve Been Waiting’, ‘Girlfriend’, and ‘Sick Of Myself’.”

Abe Partridge to open.

Germany’s post-metal act The Ocean (a.k.a. The Ocean Collective) is touring in support of Holocene.

The Ocean’s Robin Staps explains the writing process behind Holocene: “The writing process of every album we’ve ever made started with me coming up with a guitar riff, a drumbeat or a vocal idea. This album is different since every single song is based on a musical idea that was originally written by Peter (Voigtmann, synths). He came up with these amazing synth parts that were already sounding huge in pre-production, and he sent me some of those raw, unfinished ideas during mid lockdown 2020… and while it was all electronic, it had that definite Ocean vibe to it. It made me want to pick up my guitar instantly… and so I did, and it didn’t take long until we had an inspiring creative exchange that was heading towards totally unforeseen but very exciting places.”

TWIABP (01 May 2016)

The World is a Beautiful Place & I am No Longer Afraid To Die and Shy, Low to open. We caught TWIABP in 01 May 2016 and said, “I’ve always wondered how many people you could actually fit on the stage at Triple Rock. It’s not a huge stage but it’s also not tiny. The answer is 8. 8 people along with all of their instruments and backline gear. The World Is A Beautiful Place And I Am No Longer Afraid To Die, just like their huge name, is a huge group and 8 people may sound ridiculous for an indie/ rock/ weird/ noise band but it was necessary and, even though they were crammed up on that stage, they played flawlessly. The music these guys play is indescribable. I love listening to it on CD but had no clue how they would pull something like that off live. There were beautiful moments of ambient noise in their songs that are so damn gorgeous you feel like you should be having a glass of the bar’s nicest red wine with a cigar or something. But then, as soon as you get comfortable with the quietness of the moment, the band explodes and you are hit with a giant punch to the face in the form of sound.”
