English singer Marika Hackman recently released Big Sigh on January 12, 2024, her first studio album in five years. This was the “hardest record” that she’s ever made, in her own words.

Opening the show was North Wales-born, London-based Art School Girlfriend. Like Japanese House, Art School Girlfriend is just the stagename for Polly Mackey… who seemed really quiet and shy throughout her brief and very dark (lightwise) set.

UK-based singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Marika Hackman is returning to North American after five years with her new album Big Sigh. We actually mentioned her European tour dates earlier this year, so we’re happy to see that she is finally going to be in America this Fall. The tour will stop in at the Turf Club, in St Paul, on October 3, 2024.
Art School Girlfriend at Fine Line (01 May 2019)
Art School Girlfriend to open. We saw Polly Mackey in May 2019 and said, “North Wales-born, London-based Art School Girlfriend. Like Japanese House, Art School Girlfriend is just the stagename for Polly Mackey… who seemed really quiet and shy throughout her brief and very dark (lightwise) set. Most of her songs is probably taken from Come Back To Me album, including the title track… which was the second song to play after her first song “Bending Back”. With the quiet way Mackey sings and the subject matter of her songs, it is best experienced in a very quiet setting. Perhaps listening on headphones, not in a loud environment. She did ended with her danciest/loudest song, “Distance (Blank)”, with the help of pre-recorded beats.”
Hemma at 7th Street (01 Aug 2024)
Also Hemma is on the bill. We saw local singer recently on Aug 2024 and said, “local singer/songwriter Hemma, who sings about grief and healing and seems to be inspired by Joni Mitchell. Her biography mentioned that she comes from a large family of singers and sometimes she’s with a full band (but it seems easier for traveling as a soloist). Songs that she played and mentioned were “Patterns” (with the funky beats), “Home”, and “Buckskin Pony” (which she had to not use the pre-recorded background music).”

Brooklyn-based ensemble Sammy Rae & The Friends just had a party at the Palace Theatre in St Paul on October 5th. It certainly didn’t feel like a concert, but more like Sammy Rae and her friends on a typical Thursday night, just goofing around and having a lot of fun.

LESLIE ODOM, JR.
+ Victoria Canal
Fine Line Music Café Grammy and Tony Award-winning vocalist, songwriter, author and actor Leslie Odom, Jr. is touring in support of his album Mr (S-Curve Records / BMG). The show is sold out.

Sammy Rae & The Friends is returning to the Palace Theatre this October 3, 2024, as part of the tour in support of Something For Everybody (set for release on Sept 27). This band is wild and fun! Go see them, if you want to have a good time… they literally have “something for everybody” at their show. Don’t believe me? See sample photos from their previous concerts.
Sammy Rae and the Friends at Palace Theatre (05 Oct 2023)
We previously saw the band last year, and wrote, “What can I say about Sammy Rae & The Friends that haven’t already been said? Their fanbase was built largely on word of mouth, thanks to Rae’s personality and their really fun concerts. The last time we saw them, they were dressed up as the Scoobie gang at First Avenue (Oct 2022): “As you can see, Sammy Rae and the Friends were in the Halloween spirit, as everyone was in costume as Scoobie Doo and the Scoobie gang. The band has a ton of fans, and they are certainly one of the funnest band around.””
Ivor Novellos’s 2023 Rising Star winner Victoria Canal to open.
