California’s Sun Room stopped by Jack Rabbits, in Jacksonville, Florida, last night. Standing behind some youths in pirate, cow, pope, cat ladies, it’s like Halloween never ended. It was fun, and I wish I had gotten the memo to dress up as well.
This was an all-ages show, at the hole-in-the-wall tiny Jack Rabbits, where concert goers were out to have a good time. I have to admit, I’ve never heard of an all-ages show that starts at 9pm (although the first band didn’t actually show up until 9:35pm). That’s so late! I’m used to Minneapolis’ all-ages show where, curfew is at 10pm, so those shows starts at 6pm. I suppose it’s different in Jax.
I talked to a group of young fans who were in college and plays in local bands, one of them was Horizon (a guy named Jed). They’ve seen Sun Room play here and in Gainesville (about two or three hours away) and they love the band.
I saw a guy wearing a Wizard costume earlier, and it all made sense when the opening band Twin Suns came on stage, all dressed in Wizard costumes, complete with massive beards. The costumes did not stay on long on some band members, notably the drummer was the first to discard his hat, wig, and beard. I’m sure it gets super-hot and uncomfortable for long periods of time.
Twin Suns was a bit psychedelic, but that probably goes without saying in Wizard costumes. Speaking of Wizards, now that I mentioned it, they do remind me a bit of King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard. Like those guys will have a grand old time if they got together.
I also got the sense that half the audience there were Twin Suns’ friends! They all seem to know each other, and their photographer(s) one of them in a nap pajama (it looks like he was going straight to bed in that outfit) took photos of the band using flash. The lights were pretty poor at Jack Rabbits, but the number one rule is to never use flash.

Sun Room closed out the late, late night. It’s Saturday, after all, and they were just getting started. I suppose night time is the right time for a bunch of freshly bitten vampires! At first, I mistaken their white makeup and hollow eyes as zombies, but on closer inspections, I realized they were vampire with the bite marks and red blood… It was fun, you can tell they love dressing up for the occasion.
Sun Room at First Avenue (Mar 25, 2023)
Currently, the band is lead singer/guitarist Luke Asgian, Ashton on guitars, Max on bass, and their newest drummer is called Thomas (he replaced original drummer Gibby). When I saw the band (with Gibby as drummer) in March 2023, I described the band as “no-nonsense rock ‘n roll”, based on their influence of Oasis and the Rolling Stones… but it seemed like they do have a softer side, covering Mazzy Star’s “Fade into You” (but when they play it live, it sounds very ‘rock’ and sped up). You can check out their live rendition on youtube.
At some point, early in their set, a mosh pit broke out and caused a little chaos. As the pit grew, others joined in, while others flee for safety. Their new single, “On Fire”, seemed to go over well with the audience… and they closed their set with their best song, “Jackknife” … described as a pure “rager” of a song.
Sun Room’s new EP Ritual of Chaos is out now.
