■ Groove Coalition
The Groove Coalition is a Jacksonville, Florida-based band formed in 2003 (or 2012 by some accounts) that plays soul, funk, R&B, and jazz, with a motto of “Ain’t no school like the old school”. Known for performing hits from the 70s and 80s and tribute series, they are a prominent act in the Northeast Florida music scene

Marcus Harden Givens has moved into the neighborhood. To celebrate and raise awareness for his campaign to run for City Council, he threw a yard party, complete with a yard sale, free nacho bar, and entertainment, featuring The Groove Coalition.

We’ve previously seen the Groove Coalition at Amplified Avondale and noted, “Groove Coalition was a little more of my speed, and I feel had a good established fanbase. They started a little late, on account that their singer couldn’t find parking… but once she showed up, the band kicked off their set with Anthony Hamilton’s “Best of Me”.”

I think the real highlight for me were the two Fire Manipulators dancers. The best time to see them will be after dusk, and the only light source are their firesticks. They have dance routines, but the real magic was watching the flames doing its own dance. Really fun to watch, as Groove Coalition’s music provided the soundtrack.
