Poly Styrene: Black Christmas

Well, if you haven’t noticed, I’ll try and post free Christmas-related music for the next few weeks in December. So musicians, send me a note if you have a holiday song you’d like me to mention.

Remember the British punk/ska-ish band X-Ray Spex? Of course you do, well the singer of that band, Poly Styrene, announced recently that she will be releasing a new album on March 2011 called Generation Indigo. To tie you over, she’s offering a
free download of “Black Christmas” on her website,
poly-styrene.com. You should hurry and head over there and download it now, considering that I think it will no longer be available after December 20th.

The song gives you a small taste of what’s to come with Generation Indigo, produced by Youth (who’s worked with The Verve and Edwyn Collins). Be on the lookout for a physical single being released in December, the B-Side is a remix of “Black Christmas” by Kahn.

Anyway, while most holiday songs are usually of the joyful sort, this song, “Black Christmas”, sung with her daughter, Celeste, is rather a bleak: it’s about a man going around killing people dressed in a Santa outfit.
