Statement on Sweden: Due to exhaustion among the band and crew, the Morrissey headline engagement at Hovet has been cancelled. Refunds will be available at the point of purchase. The scheduled appearance on Allsång på Skansen has also been cancelled.

Morrissey’s statement suggests that it’s not exhaustion, but rather financial: The pain at not reaching Stockholm this week is horrific for the band and crew. I know it’s impossible for people to understand, but we dream of Stockholm, Reykjavik, Trondheim, Helsinki, Aarhus … but there is no financial support from imaginary record labels to get us to such places. In the last seven days we have traveled into six countries, and we are travel-weary beyond belief. We can barely see. We pray to God that someone, somewhere can help us reach Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Denmark … where we have thousands upon thousands of friends, yet absolutely zero music industry support. No label will release our music, no radio will play our music … and yet our ticket sales are sensational.Morrissey.

2019 (8 out of 30 dates – 27%)

Oh Canada!

After nearly two decades of banning Canada, Morrissey announced in September 2018 that he would return to the country: “My decision to return to Canada after almost 15 years of protest against its savage and Neanderthal annual Baby Seal Kill is entirely because my stance was ultimately of no use and helped no one. My voice was drowned out by the merciless swing of spiked axes crushing the heads of babies. On my return to Canada I feel that I can be of more use by making sizeable donations to animal protection groups in each city that I play.”

04/13/2019: Thanks to several fans who reported that Morrissey officially cancelled some Canadian dates.
Rob sent in: “Due to a medical emergency stemming from an accident incurred while traveling in Europe, Morrissey will be forced to postpone his performances in Vancouver to October 14th and 15th, 2019. Spirits are high and the artist is on the path to a swift recovery. All tickets will be valid for the new date and exchanges will not be necessary. Thank you for your understanding. Morrissey looks forward to making his long-awaited return to the city and wishes to deeply thank everyone for their patience. All remaining dates on Morrissey’s tour will resume as planned, commencing in Toronto on Friday Apr 26.”

  • 16 Dec 2017 CBS This Morning – Saturday Sessions (Although there is a 25% chance that Morrissey will cancel his Saturday Sessions, I don’t think he will. The show is pre-recorded and only requires one or two songs. Based on Anthony Mason’s Morrissey confirmation and Morrissey’s recent feisty Der Spiegel comment, it sounded like he’s feeling much better. But who knows. We’ll find out this Saturday. Update 12/14/2017: It’s possible that Morrissey will not appear live at all, but that CBS will use pre-recorded live concert footage. Update 12/17/2017: Confirmed, Morrissey did not show up. Instead, CBS used footage from Morrissey’s appearance at The Anthem in Washington DC from Nov 30, before he fell ill.)

lack of funding: Morrissey explains, in his own words, “I am informed today that the projected tour of South America is snuffed out, thus euthanized – due, I’m reliably advised, to lack of funding. It’s quite easy to sell tickets, yet impossible to transport band and crew from F to G. In a year when far too many disappointments have been buried this really is the last of many final straws, and I am not alone in feeling this. The future is suddenly absent, and my apologies are now so frequent as to be somewhat ridiculous, and it is I who apologize because no one else would bother. It is agonizing to be responsible for imparting such news – especially when it springs upon me unexpectedly and inexplicably. But the collapse of South America rings the curtain down with a colossal thud, and the major problems remain as insoluble now as they were in 2009. The obvious conclusion stares back at me from the mirror, and the wheels are finally off the covered wagon. Cancellations and illness have sucked the life out of all of us, and the only sensible solution seems to be the art of doing nothing.
As always I ask your pardon, and I offer pangs of overwhelming love and gratitude to the band and the crew, whose loyalty stretched above and beyond.”

Morrissey’s mother was hospitalized. Can’t really blame Morrissey’s humanity for suddenly stopping his tour to fly back to England to see his mother in the hospital. Originally it was only going to be a few days before he resume his tour… but unfortunately the remainder of the 2012 dates were all postponed until 2013. Those 2013 announced were also cancelled due to “a series of medical mishaps”, but you can read all about that in the 2013 entries.

Update 05/08/2019: According to Krislucius, “He came back a few months later and played the same venue and my ticket was honored.”

    From Passions Just Like Mine:

    Postponed and never rescheduled.

Morrissey may have been referring to this concert when he told the Pittsbugh Post-Gazette in 2013: “I arrived for the soundcheck and I was told that the night had to be ‘pulled’ because the stage wasn’t safe. There were a lot of people queuing in the rain, and backstage was abysmal — I don’t think there was even a toilet. When you’re faced with such situations you feel so much anger with local promoters because they charge such high ticket prices yet they have no concern for either the comfort of the artist or the safety of the audience … they think the night will just roll along on enthusiasm, which is wrong.”

This was the first solo Morrissey tour since his eighty-hate date. According to Passions Just Like Mine, there were an additional 11 shows cancelled at the end of the second leg of the North American tour, due to exhaustion. “Dates scheduled in Worcester, Albany, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, Williamsburg, Chapel Hill, Birmingham, New Orleans, Lakeland and Miami at the tail end of the tour were cancelled. After over 6 months of touring everywhere and doing television, radio and magazine interviews almost constantly, exhaustion must have had the better of Morrissey. After the opening number, ‘the Queen is Dead’, Morrissey was rushed to the hospital suffering from a head injury. According to the observer: “Morrissey was hit above the forehead with an object which had been thrown from the crowd. He didn’t know what it was, but his head was bleeding and he left the stage. The tour manager said it was a coin.” According to other members of the audience, Morrissey was hit by a drumstick, from an irate punter impatient at the long delay before The Smiths deigned to take the stage.

  • 19 Jul 1985 Wogan (Cancelled)
The Smiths were scheduled to appear on the chat show Wogan, but Morrissey did not show up. “That was the low point of my career,” laments Matthew Sztumph. “Sitting at Wogan at 3:30 in the afternoon when they’re supposed to be there at 3.00 and there’s no Morrissey. He’d gone back to Manchester. He hadn’t called anybody to let them know. I think, ultimately, Morrissey decided that The Smiths should not be on Wogan… hadn’t told the members of the band, and they were all sat there. The show was due to air at 7pm and I was not a popular person. I obviously made up some excuse that he was ill… The embarrassment was having the members of the band and myself sitting in the studio waiting for him, and the lack of consideration Morrissey had for us. The least he could have done was tell his own band!”

From Johnny Rogan’s The Smiths – Visual Documentary: Scheduled to appear at the In the Pink Festival, but at the time, Morrissey was trying to distance himself from the gay movement, in the wake of the Sun child sex scandal. “Yes the gay connotations could well be harmful when it comes to dealing with the press,” Morrissey admits. “I simply can’t get down to gender. Miscellaneous

The following cancelled/withdrawn releases are taken from Peepholism by Jo Slee (1994)

William, It Was Really Nothing (Oct 1985)

William, It Was Really Nothing (Oct 1985)

The original sleeve, featuring Billie Whitelaw as Lottie in Charlie Bubbles (1968), was withdrawn following a claim for ‘violation of privacy’ and ‘deceptive trade practices’. When it became apparent that the culprit was Rough Trade rather than Warner Bros, the US licensee, the complaint was abandoned, possibly because Rough Trade was a considerably smaller target. As the Smiths’ success gained momentum, Rough Trade was learning some swift lessons about opportunistic litigation in the face of commercial notoriety.

“It is my clients’ contention that you have deliberately used the image in question on the recording in question in order to exploit its value for advertising and/or other commercial or trade purposes…” Quite.

Headmaster Ritual (Dutch Single) (1987)

Headmaster Ritual (Dutch CD Single) (1987)
Rough Trade released the Dutch version of The Headmaster Ritual with a sleeve photograph of Viv Nicholson at her easel. Since she had already consented to appear on two previous sleeves, Rough Trade were surprised to receive a determined objection.

Extract from a letter from Rough Trade:

I received a telephone call from a Mr Asprey, the new agent, who explained that Mrs Nicholson was a Jehovah’s Witness and was embarrassed by the expression ‘spineless bastards’ on the track ‘Headmaster Ritual’. When he asked that we issue a statement disassociating Mrs Nicholson from the project, I outlined the disadvantages of this: if she wished to avoid further publicity, I felt that becasue of the over-zealous nature of Smiths fans, we should not do anything which would invite controversy and thereby have people clamouring for the record. I suggested taht RTR quietly withdraw the record and if Mrs Nicholson wished to make a statement herself she was free to do so… I (without public statement) withdrew RTT215CD, of which we had pressed 4,766 copies, from circulation immediately after Mr Asprey’s phone call.
