R.I.P. David Clayton-Thomas (Blood, Sweat & Tears)
Grammy Award-winning Canadian singer and songwriter David Clayton-Thomas, whose voice propelled Blood, Sweat & Tears to popularity, has died peacefully on the evening of Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. He was 84.
The interesting thing about him joining Blood, Sweat, and Tears was thanks to folk singer Judy Collins, who introduced him to her friend, drummer Bobby Colomby. The band was looking for a new lead singer, because Colomby and guitarist Steve Katz asked their original singer, Al Kooper, to leave the band due to “artist differences” after a brief promotional tour for their debut album Child Is Father to the Man (February 1968).
The band was looking for a stronger lead vocalist, which David Clayton-Thomas perfected fitted in the new band roster. Since then, BS&T went on to sell over 10 million copies the self-titled album and won five Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.
The rest, as they say, is history. Rest in peace, David Clayton-Thomas.
