When Animals Attack: Mt Sharkmore

Fresh from her winnings in Ready or Not 2: Here I Come (2026), the young scream queen Kathryn Newton leads the brand-new Devil’s Mouth film from Amazon Prime Video. Of course, as a Prime Member, I wanted to check it out.

The film is about five young friends (played by Kathryn Newton, Lana Condor, Nico Hiraga, Gavin Casalegno, Tommi Rose, Tayme Thapthimthong), vacationing in Thailand. They signed up for a swim in a very remote cave system called “The Devil’s Mouth”… and against better judgement, they opted for the more difficult “red path”. I hate to say, “I told you so”, but given that the name is called Devil’s Mouth, it probably sounds dangerous and evil. The movie turns deadly as they battle for survival against a shark in the Devil’s Mouth.

I do have some questions about the film. I know the writers wanted to create the problem – but why didn’t the kids just listen to the guide and followed him when they first discovered there was a shark in the water. I mean, why even ask the question – how did a shark get in here? Just get the f out of there! It’s kind of dumb, and I didn’t really feel bad when the shark started killing the kids (they are not very likeable).

I really hated all the kids. They are constantly arguing what to do next, it’s so infuriating. I just don’t understand why they couldn’t just agree on a course of action. The only person I cared about is Kathryn Newton, who is level headed in the situation… and her thinking of getting to the open ocean was the better option.

The plot reminds me of a film called The Descent (2005), which is about a group of women friends exploring a cave when they become trapped and just trying to find their way back to the surface. They soon discover that there is something dangerous that lives inside the caves. It’s a great film, but I thought it was a mistake that they made a sequel a few years after the success of the first film.

Anyway, the cool think about The Devil’s Mouth is that filmmakers showcased Thailand’s beauty early in the film. After about 30 minutes, of course, it’s all dark and danger… so it was crucial you see the country’s beauty before it got dark!

The other nice thing is that I’m starting to really like seeing Newton again. I might try and track down her previous film Abigail and Lisa Frankenstein. Her next major appearance will be a small part in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday as she reprises her role as Ant-Man’s daughter.

Anyway, The Devil’s Mouth is out now if you have Amazon Prime. If you don’t, I believe it is also available on Tubi with advertisements.
