Crime Time: I Will Survive

■ Charlize TheronE Online is reporting that Charlize Theron is ready to go beyond Thunderdome. I was in a bit shock to read that, simply because the last thing I heard about Mad Max 4 was that the movie would take place with Mad Max’s son (Mel Gibson to play the aging father). If the Theron rumor is true, does that also mean that Mad Max 4: Fury Road have been re-written?
Apex (2026)
I’ve been a big fan of Charlize Theron since she played Aeon Flux and then as “Mad Maxine” (Furiosa) in Mad Max: Fury Road. I’m just a big fan, I think she’s great. Theron’s latest movie, Apex is a survival/action film. It premiered on Netflix on April 24, 2026.
Apex starts off with a backstory on Theron (playing Sasha). She’s climbing a mountain with her partner, who then falls to his death to a storm. We cut to present day, seeing Sasha driving in the middle of nowhere, Australia. We get warning from the local police that people get “lost” or go missing all the time and it can get dangerous. She’s a thrill seeker, a survivalist, and it just sounds like she’s just trying to enjoy the outdoors solo river kayaking in Australia.
Then one morning, all her gear and phone and food was taken. She runs into Ben, a guy she previously met at the gas station. He seems friendly enough and shared his food… but then you realized there’s something sinister with this Ben character.
It’s half way into the film, and the film turns into a psycho hunter/prey/survival story. Turns out Ben took her gear, then returns it, starts to play a song and then tells her she has until the end of the song to get far away from him as possible as he threatens her with a crossbow. In a panic, she jumps into her kayak and crashed/loses her kayak down the stream. Now, armed with just her survival bag and her partner’s compass, she has to outwit and evade this dangerous human hunter.
Her hunter has the homefield advantage, since he knows the area. Sasha has to somehow outsmart the hunter. It’s gripping and it’s scary, because you’re isolated from the world and you have no phone or means of communicating and calling for help.
Of course, you know where this is going, right? Theron will have to fight back and become the hunter herself in order to survive. But it’s not how it ends… I won’t go into details, but somehow, the story closes with Sasha’s rock-climbing skills are put to the final test. All that back-story about her rock-climbing origins earlier in the film absolutely paid off.
I’m sure the guy who plays Ben is a nice guy in person, but his character is truly creepy and crazy. I had to look it up, but he really transformed himself. It’s the same guy who plays the “Eggsy” in those Kingsman action movie.
Send Help (2026)
I didn’t like Send Help, the latest movie by Sam Raimi. As a longtime fan (love Evil Dead and even Spider-Man). I even really love Drag Me to Hell, which I own the Bluray. But quite frankly, Send Help is bad because the main character (played by Rachel McAdams) is a horrible person.
At first, you feel sorry for McAdams and you root for her. Everybody is against her, so when her company’s plane crashed on a deserted island, you really do root for her to be survive the movie.
As the movie plays, slowly it starts to turn and you realized you’re watching a villain. Sure, her boss (Dylan O’Brien) is also a horrible person, and between the two horrible people, you really don’t know who to stand with. For heaven’s sake, let both of them die! I hated everyone in the film, is this the whole point of this film?
There were some trademark Raimi-humor in the film, like the throw-up scene. And being a Raimi movie, I was trying to figure out where his car is (Raimi puts his beloved car in all his films and television shows – including westerns like Quick and the Dead).
I’m not even sure why Raimi pushed to get Send Help made, as it’s a bad story and it has terrible unlikeable characters… I just really hope this is a one-and-done movie. I would rather see another Drag Me to Hell film – call it Drag Me To Hell Again! It could be a totally new set of characters, but still based on that same demon / curse premise. That would be fun, because at least I can always root for the demon to drag these depictable humans to hell.
So yeah, I wasted my time watching Send Help.
