■ Everything but the GirlEverything but the Girl is an English pop and electronic music duo formed in Kingston upon Hull in 1982, featuring Tracey Thorn (lead singer, songwriter, composer, and occasional guitarist) and Ben Watt (Guitarist, keyboardist, songwriter, composer, producer, and singer)
Everything But The Girl
It’s good to see UK duo Everything But The Girl back with Blue Reservoir… the eleventh studio album. The couple Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt have been around since 1982.
We managed to catch Watt on a solo tour in 2014 and described it as, “I cannot begin to tell you how lucky we were to have caught Ben Watt (one half of Everything But The Girl) with Bernard Butler (original Suede guitarist) at the very tiny Bryant-Lake Bowl Theater in Minneapolis, late Saturday night. Before I talk about the show, I wanted to briefly talk about Bryant-Lake Bowl Theater as it’s a venue that I’m sure many of you have not attended… The venue is entirely seated, with the seats in the back on a raised incline, so sightline is a non-issue. Maximum capacity is 82, making it one of the smallest venue in the city. My only complaint, especially if you’re seating next to the door, is that whenever someone leaves the venue (bathroom breaks or taking a phone call outside), you can definitely hear the crashing pins and the loud, excited bowlers. It may depend on the show, but for this Watt performance, the entire audience was completely quiet and highly respectful of the performances.”

Violet Grohl
Did you know Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters & Nirvana) has a daughter who is a musician? Her name is Violet Grohl and she’s the subject of Vevo’s latest DSCVR videos. The two songs (“Bug in the Cake” and “Often Others”) are taken from her debut album Be Sweet To Me (Auroura Records / Republic Records). Watch the video performance here.

Rayland Baxter
Nashville’s alternative country artist Rayland Baxter (son of Bucky Baxter) just released True Violet, last Friday, on ATO Records. This is Baxter’s first album in more than four years.
Baxter talks about the solitude of songwriting:
I sat in my chair alone for a year and wrote a bunch of songs, and what started off as an attempt to write a record got sideswiped by mediocre attempts I wouldn’t even sing to my dog. Then, like many times over the last three years, I called my sister. We talked about life and family and love and heartache, and our individual experiences with all of that. She simply encouraged me to write about what I was feeling, something I was avoiding in the early stages of writing.

Jess Woodland
Nashville native Jess Woodland will be heading out on tour with Blue October. I’ve seen Blue October in October (!) of 2019 and noted, “Blue October formed in Texas in 1995 and had over 20+ singles in the top 40 of the alternative rock charts, over their thirteen albums. Currently, the band is on a “Farewell 2019 Tour”, as part of their I Will Follow You tour (their last album came out in 2018 called I Hope You’re Happy.)”
Woodland will be coming to Jacksonville on November 19th, so I will be showing up early to check out her intimate, rootsy “goth-hick” sound.
Woodland officially signed with Rounder Records earlier this month, and released “Sling and Stone.”

Girl in Red
Norwegian singer, songwriter and producer girl in red is back with “blue”, out now on Columbia Records.
Officially, her Instagram is now officially @girlinblue – so does this mean there’s a name change in the works? Stay tuned for more details.
We saw Girl in Red in 2022 and said, “It’s fair to say area fans had been waiting more than two years to finally see Girl in Red live. The show was long sold out and had to be postponed a couple times, and it’s also fair to say when shrieks of joy are let out as techs tuned each instrument, and a dozen or so handmade signs were held high in the crowd all night long, that you’ve made it and also made a connection. Just twenty-three herself, Norwegian Marie Ringheim has quickly amassed a huge international fan base, and being an all-ages show, the audience was a diverse group- mostly female pre-teens, college-age, parents, LGBTQ+, and even middle-age and older folks.”
Gently Tender
Did you know when Palma Violets broke up in 2016, all the members of Palma Violets bar Chilli Jesson (Samuel Fryer, Jeffrey Peter Mayhew and Will Doyle) was in a band called Gently Tender. The South London six-piece also features Celia Archer of The Big Moon. The band just released their second album This Was Once Fields on TODO Records… and will be heading out on tour in November.
