■ Gwar
Gwar is an American heavy metal band formed in Richmond, Virginia, in 1984. Science fiction mythology featuring barbaric interplanetary warriors (“Scumdogs of the Universe”), grotesque latex/foam costumes, satirical political lampooning, and theatrical live shows spraying fake blood and body fluids.
What a great Halloween treat, as GWAR brought their “Gor-Gor Must Die” show to FIVE, in Jacksonville, Florida, last night.
Two “prisoners” came on stage in bright orange jumpsuits. They started playing a song, when X-Cops (not to be confused with alternative duo Ex Cops) showed up and arrested these convicts. In fact, they sentenced one of them to be the drummer. It’s all for laughs, and the band is dressed in police uniforms, with one of them in a S&M zipper leather face (because “98% of his body was burned”) and another one looking a bit like he escaped from the Village People.
They ended their set with “The Art of Shutting Your F**king Mouth”, which a bit of a singalong with some fans in the audience. They were a lot of fun, and apparently this is a side project of GWAR. It made sense, they need to expand and broaden their horizons.
Next up was Mac Sabbath, a Black Sabbath and McDonald’s tribute/comedy band. All their songs are about fast food, done in the style of Black Sabbath and other metal-bands… like a cover of Iron Maiden’s “The Grouper”.
I would think Mac Sabbath would be place higher on the roster of bands, considering that their over-the-top Grimace and Mayor McCheese musicians. Everybody loves the costumes, and the whole theme. Some fans even came, dressed up as Ronald McDonald.
Their song finale was a cover of Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid”. Not a parody, just a straight-up good cover song.
Black & Roll Midnight (not to be confused with Synthpop band The Midnight) was up next. Their music was fast and it’s aggressive. The band have black hoods covering their head. I can see why the trio (led by Athenar), is the penultimate band… as they can probably headline their own show.
Midnight was celebrating the 15th Anniversary of their debut Satanic Royalty album… so their set actually was their album, played from start to finish: starting with the title track and ending with “Shock ‘til Blood” … sandwiched between “Unholy and Rotten” and closing song “F**king Speed and Darkness”.
Of course, it’s GWAR that everybody was there to see. Fans to the front, soaked in fake blood will forever remember this night of passage. Characters, such as Donald Trump and “Pete Hegseth” (it doesn’t look like him, but they happily chop him up just the same) came on stage only to be killed and spraying blood all over the place. Look, it’s just really fun.
If you keep up, the current story of Gor-Gor is that Gwar’s pet Gor-Gor, a Tyrannosaurus rex, was born by injecting crack cocaine into a dinosaur egg. Throughout the years, Gor-Gor was killed and went to hell… but recently came back to wreak havoc on Gwar. You can find out more about Gor-Gor through Gwar’s comic book and music.
I’ve previously said that you don’t have to like metal, to really enjoy a Gwar show – because it’s like watching a movie or show. You just sit back and relax and watch all the blood and gore. It’s not meant to be taken too seriously, it’s all done in the name of entertainment.
