Lucky
I’ve been watching Apple TV’s latest thriller Lucky, for Crime Time. When the theme song came up, I had no idea who the artist was, but I love the vocal styling and the crazy lyrics of “I was born in the horns of a bull”! Whatever does that mean!!? “My daddy put my crib under Damacles’ sword. I saw the bull and became a toreador — RAH!” (!!!)
Turns out the theme song is by Fiona Apple! Apple’s original song also appears on the official Lucky (Apple Original Series Soundtrack), which was composed by Isabella Summers, also known as Isa Machine of Florence + the Machine.
As for the Lucky show, so far, I’m not sure if I like the show. It’s based on a book by Marissa Stapley. I haven’t read it, but based on what I’ve seen on the show, it just like other plot I’ve seen in other crime drama. Anya Taylor-Joy, who is the lead, as Lucky, and her husband stole money from the husband’s parent side. Then she wakes up to find her husband betrayed her and left her hold the (empty) bag. Now the mob (her husband’s parents), the FBI, and everybody is after Lucky.
I know that sounds great, but through the process of barely escaping one situation to another, Lucky does everything in her manipulating bag like lying, deceiving, back-stabbing, killing, and stealing to escape. They’re not exactly admiral traits, but I don’t think her character was ever meant to be liked. For myself, I need to like the character to root for them. If I do not like them, then why do I care for the character?
The show’s co-star is Timothy Olyphant, from Justified, but he’s barely in the series. He is currently in jail, so his appearances are nothing more than line-reading from an isolated location. The advertisements is misleading, because you think that it’s a father-daughter criminal show, but it’s really just Lucky running around and escaping one trap after another.
Maybe there’s still time for the show to turn around, but from what I’ve seen so far, it’s not really good, in my opinion.
