La Sera: Sees the Light
I can tell you that the first time I heard La Sera's self-titled debut album, it was such a relief to hear this lushy dreampop sound from Vivian Girls' Katy "Kickball Katy" Goodman. I love it, but I have always thought it was just a one-off side project, that is until I saw that she just released Sees The Light in March 2012 via Hardly Art Records.
If you haven't heard the new album, check out these free MP3s: As I understand it, while the debut album was dreamy with layered vocals, Sees The Light is more like an aggressive soundtrack to a drive-in movie. When asked about her influences, Goodman said, "My main musical influence is definitely '60s pop – The Shirelles, Roy Orbison and The Beatles. I love writing two-minute pop songs with big choruses and a lot of seventh chords." The "two-minute pop song" and "oldies" sound is right-on as Dan, who caught them at SXSW 2012 reported this: "La Sera: Good 4 piece pop band from Los Angeles. They play three minute pop songs with jangly guitars. Both guitarists can play lead; one tends to favor a surf sound in his solos. Think The Ventures La Sera's big tour starts today, October 10th:
