The Dodos

The first time I heard of The Dodos in 2010, we called them band of the show. I eventually caught them in 2011, when they toured with Bleeding Rainbow

Springtime Carnivore

Los Angeles' Springtime Carnivore, a woman called Greta "of twelve siblings". Springtime Carnivore's self-titled debut album will be out November 4th
…

It was a sold out night for The Dodos at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis, last Saturday, March 7th.

Springtime Carnivore

The last time Los Angeles' Springtime Carnivore was in town, it was with New Orleans' The Generationals last November 2014.
Singer Greta seemed really happy to be back in the Twin Cities, especially how she loved our "confusing" accents, "it's 'about' 'aboot' 'a boat'"…

She also had a full band, except mid-set, when she was left alone to sing "Other Side of the Boundary".

Highlight of her set has to be when she played for an advertisement agency and they mostly sold "Huggies" (diapers), so the whole time she kept relating lyrics of "Collectors" to collecting poop and "Depends", etc. It took a lot for her to make it through the song without laughing out loud.

As for The Dodos, this was my third time seeing the band and this is probably their best show yet. The audience of mostly younger school or college kids, has grown in numbers since we last saw them… and I'm really happy to see them selling out the 7th Street Entry.

Most of their set consists of their sixth studio album Individ, which came out January 2015 via Polyvinyl Records, including "The Tide". During that song singer/guitarist Meric Long said that drummer Logan Kroeber only wore his special cartoon nude t-shirt for "special occasions".

In interviews, Meric said that they felt Individ came really easy, especially coming off of their previous album Carrier, "Songs came together easily, there was not a lot of questioning, just moving ahead with the feeling that we were on the right track. We were freed up to do whatever came naturally."

The Dodos, with Springtime Carnivore

Also, you can tell that the two bands (Dodos and Springtime Carnivore) have really bonded on this tour… The Dodos must have heard the diaper commercial story from previous shows, as they made comments about it near the end of their set. Then for the very last song on the encore, Greta came on stage to play out to "Don't Try And Hide It" with incredibly big smiles on all their faces.

As for the other two previous songs on the encore, "Horny Hippies" and "Ashley", they were requests from the audience, because as Meric put it, "We played all the songs we wanted to play… now we're playing what you guys want to hear."

If this sounds like a lot of fun, the tour is not over yet. Remaining The Dodos and Springtime Carnivore tour dates:

03/10 – Spokane, WA @ The Bartlett
03/11 – Seattle, WA @ Neumos
03/12 – Vancouver, BC @ Fortune Sound Club
03/13 – Portland, OR @ Doug Fir Lounge
03/14 – Boise, ID @ Neurolux
03/15 – Salt Lake City, UT @ Urban Lounge
03/16 – Denver, CO @ Bluebird Theater

The Dodos' latest Individ is out now on Polyvinyl Records, while Springtime Carnivore's self-titled debut album came out in 2014 via Autumn Tone Records.
