Melvins at 40 Watt Club, Athens (05 September 2016)

I’ve always been a fan of metal; thrash metal, death metal, even the more radio-friendly metal of bands like Iron Maiden. But September 5, 2016 was all about sludge metal when The Melvins played the 40 Watt Club in Athens, GA.
The Melvins began their set with Eye Flys, a song with perhaps the longest, most drawn out buildup ever, slowly plugging along and mired in sludge. The drums sounded like bones hitting rocks. Then without warning the cymbals crashed, the vocal kicked in and they were off. Definitely different from the speed of thrash metal, but enjoyable just the same.
Drummer Dale Crover did most of the talking between songs, and all three band members sang lead at various points during the show. Bassist Steve McDonald sang lead on a cover of Janus, Jeanie and George Harrison, a song by his band Redd Kross.
Frontman Buzz Osborne, a.k.a. King Buzzo, wore his customary black robe covered in a design of huge metallic eyeballs. A fan at his feet blew his silver afro skyward.

Helms Alee
|
Opener Helms Alee joined the Melvins onstage to finish out the show with Night Goat and a cover of Take Me Out to the Ballgame. Both bands hammed it up and looked like they were having a good time, finishing it all by standing side by side with hands linked and taking a series of bows as if they’d just performed a play for us. It was a good show.
The Melvins are touring behind their latest album Basses Loaded.
