The Longest Johns

Evans probably heard it from Bristol-based a cappella musical group The Longest Johns, who recorded their version on their album Between Wind and Water.

Bristol’s The Longest Johns sold out their 7th Street Entry appearance in Minneapolis, on March 9th… thanks to the viral hit song “Wellerman”.

Opening the show was local bluegrass band Rainbolt Mountain Project.
They covered The Grateful Dead’s “Dark Hallow” and The Rolling Stones’ “Dead Flowers”… but in a bluegrass version.

As far as we can tell, the group has released an album, yet they had a lot of written songs… songs about someone’s wife (“She’s the One For Me”) and songs about Whiskey.

They played until someone told them that their time was up, and they seemed surprised, “that’s it??”

The Longest Johns has some of the most diverse fanbase, from very old fans to the youngest fan (a 10 year old boy with his dad) to teenagers. The dancefloor was completely packed.

While the group had a drummer and guitarist, the most important instruments seems to be their vocals, which Andy Yates, Dave Robinson, Jonathan “JD” Darley, and Robbie Sattin were happy to display for us.

They’re known for singing traditional “sea shanties”, they also write their own songs (in that English style of course).

They started their set with “Santiana” and soon tells us about an original song about the ship Olympic. While everyone knows the famous Titanic, few knew that she had two sister ships, the Olympic and Britannic. Both Titanic and Britannic sank, but not good old reliable Olympic.

Of course, everyone came to see them perform “Wellerman”, which, of course they were happy to oblige. They saved the best for last.

The Longest Johns’ latest Smoke & Oakum is out now on Decca.
