New York’s Avey Tare headlined the 7th Street Entry on Saturday night in support of his fourth album 7s.
Opening the show was Good Doom, who played some songs from their albums Shocking Cloud and Welcome to the Ghost, under extreme blood red lighting.
They seemed really grateful when Avey Tare booked the band for the show. They drew out their 30-min set, hardly speaking and concentrating on playing their pyschwave songs. When they did speak, it’s to answer someone in the audience that they’re from Minneapolis.
As you may have already known, Avey Tare is part of Animal Collective, the popular experimental pop band. Like many music collective, sometime a songwriter may have an idea that doesn’t exactly fit in the Animal Collective sound… so that’s why we have Noah Lennox doing solo project as Panda Bear, Josh Dibb working as Deakin, Brian Weitz releasing projects under Geologist… and David Portner working as Avey Tare.
Seeing Portner work on this tour is pretty amazing. Avey Tare is responsible for playing the live music, he’s programmed the background music, set up the art stage (with two alligators), put together the video projection, has all his guitars pre-tuned and ready to go… he is basically the ultimate one-man-band. Unfortunately, due to the tight programming, it also meant that the set is basically the same night after night… but it has to be so everything can go according to plan.
As you can see from the setlist, they’re all solo Avey Tare material, with the exception for the last song. For the truly diehard fans who stuck around, they’re awarded with the Animal Collective song, “Chocolate Girl”. The song is a personal song co-written by Avey Tare and Panda Bear, about growing up and losing innocence.
