That are no words–
You just have to see the best instrumental rock band in the biz, Explosions In The Sky live (which has become more or a rarity) and we did just that, catching them on their “The End Tour” at The Truman in downtown Kansas City.
The longtime Austin TX quartet (Chris Hrasky– drums; Michael James– guitar, bass, keys; Munaf Rayani– guitar, keys; Mark Smith– guitar, keys; along with Jay Demko– bass, guitar, keys, percussion) is on their first tour in four years, in support of latest (but not last) and eighth album, “End”, which came out last September.
The band treated fans to three epic songs from the latest release (oddly, none from previous album, “The Wilderness”) in a nine-song performance of building intensities, big beats and chords, and rising crescendos, amidst atmospheric and often minimal lighting, that became an immersive live performance.
Tapped as openers were the local shoe gaze/slow core trio Nightosphere (Claire Hannah and Brittany Sawtelle-guitar/bass/vocals; Dekota (Hop) Trogdon– drums/lap steel), supporting their full length, Katabasis, released last April.
The band is relatively new, having only formed in 2021 – the two guitarists/vocalists and drummer proved effective in building their own sonic soundscapes and winning over the crowd.
