The Decemberists
with Ratboys
at Palace Theatre

first-avenue.com

Portland’s beloved The Decemberists is returning with a new album As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again, available June 14th via YABB Records (Thirty Tigers). I’m assuming we can hear a preview of the upcoming album at the Palace Theatre, in St Paul, on May 19th, 2024. The show is sold out.

Certainly we are going to hear their new single, “All I Want Is You”, a true love song, as singer Colin Meloy explains, “An unapologetic, wear-it-on-its-sleeve love song. I don’t write a ton of those, at least not in this vein. The song grew out of the finger picking pattern — “Don’t want pretty poses…” — and I just followed that lead. In the end, it just kind of wrote itself. It’s so bare bones, it lived for a long time in my songwriting notebook, kind of in hiding, before I got up the courage to put it out there. It shares a title and hook with many songs that have come before it, but I like to think I’m merely adding my own take to that tradition.”

Decemberists (24 Mar 2015)

We last saw the band in Mar 2015 and wrote, “The encore was first teased with the ready for springtime song, ‘June Hymn’, then was a direct hit to the gullet, with their other folky mega-epic, the bouncy ‘The Mariner’s Revenge Song’ which stretched some twenty minutes. People were prompted to scream at a certain part ¾ of the way into the song, and the reaction was not unwarranted as a large cut-out profile of a whale ambled on stage to slowly eat each of the band members in a row, to the crowd’s shrieking delight.”

Ratboys to open. The Chicago band previously was in town in October 2023.

Church of Cash
at Le Musique Room

lemusiqueroom.com

Minnesota’s favorite Johnny Cash tribute band Church of Cash is playing a two-night show at the Le Musique Room in St. Michael, Minnesota, on May 19 (at 3pm) and May 20 (at 1pm).

We are actually very interested in checking out this venue, as it’s a converted cinema megaplex.

According to the venue’s website, “The St. Michael Cinema megaplex in St. Michael, Minnesota, has become the area’s latest live music venue, thanks to some ingenious thinking on the part of the new owners. Le Musique Room at the St. Michael Cinema (French for The Music Room) — was originally built as one of the 15 theaters inside the 96,000 sq. foot movie house that now features 13 state-of-the-art movie screens. The new showcase destination is built into theater 15 of the megaplex located at 4300 O’Day Avenue NE, St. Michael, Minnesota. Music fans can expect incredible sound, lighting and video accouterments in the 199-seat theater and concert space, complete with Parisian design elements that highlight the entire complex.
