Australian funk and soul band Hiatus Kaiyote has come back to the Twin Cities, playing the Palace Theatre, in St Paul, in support of their recently released album Love Heart Cheat Code (Brainfeeder Records / Ninja Tune).

Originally Clever Austin (aka Perrin Moss), was to open the show, but we found out that it was SILENTJAY (aka Nap King Cole – obviously a nod to Nat King Cole) who came on stage to open the show. Silentjay, a reference to Kevin Smith’s Jay and Silent Bob, also plays in the band as backup singer and various instruments.

Hiatus Kaiyote at First Avenue (25 April 2023)

Silentjay’s set a little bit of pre-recorded instrumental, with live performance on his on soprano sax. He said that when Hiatus Kaiyote came to play First Avenue in April 2023, it was truly the highlight of his life. He spazzed out all the references from Purple Rain and how much Prince influenced him. It meant a lot to him to play the historic venue.

Just before he was to end his set, he decided to play one final song. It was recorded yesterday (July 11), when they were in their hotel, jamming and covering new smooth jazz songs. He said that the Minneapolis funk definitely creeped into their recording.

Hiatus Kaiyote core band members are Naomi “Nai Palm” Saalfield (guitar, vocals), Paul Bender (bass), Simon Mavin (keyboards), and Perrin Moss (drums)… but for their live shows, they’ve also added Silentjay and Lorry. Before the band started their set, Lorry lit an incense, which I heard was “Princense.”

The band is known for fusing funk, jazz, R&B, but they’re also known for their support of art and style. For example, the band collaborated with various artists like Rajni Perera (her painting was used as the cover artwork of Love Heart Cheat Code), Chloé Biocca, Gray Ghost, and Lauren YS (which looks like their stage dragon art was used). In addition, their love of art is reflected in their love of fashion (a reflection can be seeing in their fanbase who often dressed in colorful art fashion) and even love of Japanese anime.

Fashion and art have always been Hiatus Kaiyote’s calling card as seen in Nai Palm’s fashion in Oct 2015 and wrote, “Hiatus Kaiyote headlined the show. The Melbourne group features singer/guitarist Nai Palm, bassist Paul Bender, keyboardist Simon Mavin, and drummer Perrin Moss. They’ve been together since 2010. Their music mixes rap and R&B, and a lot of artists have sampled Hiatus Kaiyote songs, such as Anderson .Paak’s with “Molasses” in “Without You” on his album Malibu. ”

They encourage everyone in the audience to become friends with strangers, as it’s a safe place… and also the theme of one of their new songs, “Make Friends.” The entire concert is to bring people together to dance to their funky soul music.

Hiatus Kaiyote’s new album, Love Heart Cheat Code is out now on Brainfeeder Records / Ninja Tune.
