Seun Kuti & Egypt 80
at Fine Line
first-avenue.com

Afrobeat legends Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 have announced a North American tour for 2024, presented by Django Music. The tour will stop by the Fine Line, in Minneapolis, on July 26, 2024.

Seun Kuti and Egypt 80 (21 June 2015)

We saw the group at Rock the Garden in June 2015 and said, “How fitting on Father’s Day that the heir to the Afrobeat throne, Seun Kuti , led his father Fela’s band, Egypt 80, playing undoubtedly the highest energy hour of the weekend. The Nigerian group was the worldbeat entry to the festival and the first African band to grace its stage. Kuti and his fifteen-plus cohorts made their short time worth it with the tribal, jazz, funk, and rhythmic hybrid that his father pioneered.”

Tour dates:

  • July 20 Denver, CO – Levitt Pavillion
  • July 22 Cuyahoga Falls, OH – Blossom Music Center
  • July 23 Detroit, MI – The Shelter
  • July 24 Kalamazoo, MI – Bell’s Eccentric Cafe

The Wildwoods
at 318 Café (Excelsior)
three-eighteen.com

Nebraska’s The Wildwoods is out touring, as they prepare to write and record their fourth album. As part of the tour, they are stopping by the tiny city of Excelsior, in Minnesota, at 318 Café.

We haven’t been to that city in a very long time, but it’s a beautiful, small city, especially in the summer.

The trio features violinist Chloe Gose, guitarist Noah Gose, and bassist Andrew Vaggalis. They’ve been playing together for a decade.

Noah described the band: “On stage, our gentle harmonies weave together like threads within a rich tapestry of sound. Through our songs, inspired by the individuals we’ve crossed paths with and the landscapes we’ve traversed, we strive to engage the audience in a conversation, inviting them to connect with our narratives and immerse themselves in the vivid imagery our music evokes.”

The Great Midwest Rib Fest is returning to Mystic Lake for its 10th Anniversary, kicking off Thursday, July 25, and ending on
Saturday, July 27. The event is free to the public.

Lineup:

THURSDAY, JULY 25
John Michael Montgomery • Headliner
Hannah Dasher • Opener

FRIDAY, JULY 26
War • Headliner
Average White Band • Opener

SATURDAY, JULY 27
Five For Fighting • Headliner
Letters To Cleo • Opener

Since most of you work on the weekdays, I suggest Saturday’s show, featuring Grammy® nominated, platinum-selling artist Five for Fighting (aka John Ondrasik). The full band features drummer Randy Cooke (Mick Jagger, Ringo Starr, Dave Stewart), bassist Sean Hurley (John Mayer, Ringo Starr, Alanis Morissette), and guitarist Peter Thorn (Chris Cornell, Melissa Etheridge, Don Henley).

Also worth checking out is Letters to Cleo. You might remember their massive 90s hit “Here and Now”. Fun fact, Letters to Cleo’s singer Kay Hanley actually dubbed Rachael Leigh Cook’s singing vocals for the film Josie and the Pussycats.

DIIV
with Horse Jumper of Love and Full Body 2
at First Avenue

first-avenue.com

DIIV is touring in support of their new album Frog in Boiling Water. Their headlining show at First Avenue this July 28, 2024, is going to be their biggest venue yet.

Dive (29 Apr 2012)

We’ve been writing about this band since 2012, when they were originally called Dive: “Next up were Brooklyn-based indie charmers, DIIV (pronounced “dive”). The name might not ring a bell as they’ve just recently changed it (like, today) from DIVE in order to not be confused with the Belgian industrial band with the same name. Zachary Cole Smith and co. arrived on stage sporting the latest in street urchin fashion. Despite the questionable attire, they proved almost immediately why they’ve been receiving quite a bit of media buzz despite only having released a pair of 7” singles. They played a tight, energetic set made up of songs from their single releases and a few unreleased tracks from their upcoming debut album, Oshin, to be released on Captured Tracks on June 26th. They also threw in a cover of a Kurt Cobain demo “Bambi Slaughter” for good measure. DIIV are a shoegazey, dream-pop outfit that deliver live, as well as, on record — I definitely recommend checking out their upcoming debut or getting in on one their live shows!”
