20 August 2024 Tuesday
King Buzzo & Trevor Dunn
with JD Pinkus
at Turf Club

first-avenue.com

Melvins’ found and lead singer King Buzzo has teamed up with Mr. Bungle’s bass player Trevor Dunn for this “King Dunn Tour.”

We last saw Melvins in September 2016 and wrote, “The Melvins began their set with Eye Flys, a song with perhaps the longest, most drawn out buildup ever, slowly plugging along and mired in sludge. The drums sounded like bones hitting rocks. Then without warning the cymbals crashed, the vocal kicked in and they were off. Definitely different from the speed of thrash metal, but enjoyable just the same. Drummer Dale Crover did most of the talking between songs, and all three band members sang lead at various points during the show. Bassist Steve McDonald sang lead on a cover of Janus, Jeanie and George Harrison, a song by his band Redd Kross.”

Support for this tour will be from JD Pinkus, featuring members of Butthole Surfers. Their new album Grow A Pear is out now.

21 August 2024 Wednesday
Midge Ure
with DJ Jake Rudh
at Parkway Theater

theparkwaytheater.com

Legendary Scottish musician and producer Midge Ure will be headlining the Parkway Theater, in Minneapolis, on August 21, 2024.

If the strange name isn’t familiar, you may be familiar with his other bands, notably Thin Lizzy, Visage (had a huge hit with “Fade to Grey”) and Ultravox (which was one of the key bands of the New Romantic music movement).

We saw Midge Ure in January 2020, we said, “And for over four musical decades, legendary Ultravox/Visage singer Midge Ure has done just that, bringing his solo Songs, Questions & Answers Tour to the recordBar in downtown Kansas City for a two-hour, audience-driven evening of familiar songs, funny stories, and worldly insights. Ure’s latest album is last September’s Soundtrack 1978-2019 (Chrysalis Records), re-visiting his classic Ultravox and solo/collaboration work over 32 tracks, as well as adds in previously unreleased material. The evening’s setlist was a similar musical template, going back to Ure’s first success with Visage in the late 70’s, to more recent solo songs.”

Transmission’s Jake Rudh to DJ before the show.

24 August 2024 Saturday
Lindsey Stirling
with Walk off the Earth
at Armory

armorymn.com

American violinist, songwriter, and dancer Lindsey Stirling is returning to Minneapolis, playing the Armory on August 24. The violinist has over 13 million YouTube subscriber, and expect a strong turnout at the massive music venue this Saturday.

Stirling’s seventh studio album Duality is out now on Concord Records.

We saw Stirling in June 2015 and said, “Arizona’s Lindsey Stirling is a super star violinist and dancer. I believe her personality (which you can see on her popular YouTube channel) and talent help her sell half a million of her album. Whatever she is doing, she’s doing it right. Her show is actually pretty fun, because of the costume changes and choreographed dance sequence by her four dancers (from Los Angeles, Nebraska, Utah, and Michigan), her set is mostly unchanged from show to show. For the time-consuming costume changes, we’re shown 2-3 minute videos to allow for setup to the next song.”

JUNO Award-winning multi-platinum musical phenomenon Walk off the Earth (not to be confused with Walk Off the Moon) to open. The band’s latest single “Better At Love” is available now is their support for Lindsey Stirling ends at the Armory.

We caught the band when they played Basilica Block Party in July 2017 and wrote, “Walk Off the Earth was undoubtedly the most fun band to see of the weekend. The Ontario, CAN six-piece (+3 live) ensemble threw everything including the kitchen sink, into their energetic hour-long performance, including confetti cannons, drums that “blew” smoke rings when struck, a group kazoo solo, playing plastic pipes and pool noodles, and five members strumming a single guitar. Part jukebox band (they re-interpret several current hit songs) and with multi-genre songs of their own, they nearly define the term, musical melting pot.”

Tour dates:

  • August 17, 2024 – Washington, DC – The Anthem
  • August 19, 2024 – Huber Heights, OH – Rose Music Center at The Heights
  • August 20, 2024 – Sterling Heights, MI – Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre

Maggie Rose
at Minnesota State Fair
mnstatefair.org

Powerhouse singer/songwriter Maggie Rose will be playing the Leinie Lodge Bandshell Stage, inside the Minnesota State Fair, on August 24 and 25. Rose’s new album No One Gets Out Alive, out now on Big Loud Records.

We saw Maggie Rose at the Wrong Party in Aug 2022, we said, “Maggie Rose opened the evening with her band in an all-too brief set. Based out of Nashville, the songs tended to have a Southern Soul vibe with a little bit of Country. She has quite the dynamic voice with a range that harkens Aretha Franklin more than Patsy Cline. She had no problem filling the Palace Theater with ballads like “Saint” and “It’s You”, finishing with the anthem-like “What Are We Fighting For?” from her latest album Have a Seat.”
