Acclaimed Portland singer/songwriter Genevieve Stokes just headlined Turf Club, in St Paul, on October 24, 2024.

As far as I know, the Turf Club show may be her first headlining show in the Minneapolis/St Paul area. She seemed to love the staff and she loves the Cloud Lounge (underneath the Turf Club). Stokes previously opened for Briston Maroney at the Amsterdam Bar & Hall on March 1, 2022, and then again returning back to the 7th Street Entry on November 10, 2022, supporting Charlie Burg.

We’re assuming her previous shows only had Stokes by herself… this time, as headliner, she is accompanied by drummer Fiona Stocks-Lyons and bassist Pete Cafarella (both help produce the new album With A Lightning Strike), added much to her songs. For example, she’s freed up to do that fun song “River”, as she dances around the stage.

Most of the set was taken from her debut album With A Lightning Strike, available now on Atlantic Records. The record has over 1.3M monthly listeners, with a standout track “Mean Guy” gaining over 6.3M views on TikTok.

Los Angeles singer & songwriter Lily Kershaw opened the show, stating that this was her first time in St Paul, possibly her first time ever. She said she was playing a few new songs from her new (third album) Pain & More to start off, but she’ll quickly do some older songs.

For “Darker Things”, she explained it was somewhat about a guy named Nick that she used to date. She accidentally ran into him a few times at the Father John Misty show and basically had the seat in front of Nick.

She had some fans in the audience, who requested and helped her sing “Now and Then” and then “The Last Light.”

Highlight of her set was a cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Chelsea Hotel #2.”
