Adult.
Adult (stylized as ADULT.) is an American band from Detroit, Michigan, formed in 1998 by married couple Nicola Kuperus and Adam Lee Miller. The band integrates vocals with drum machines, analog synthesizers and electronic/punk elements. Both band members have art degrees. Miller has a painting degree, and Kuperus a photography degree.
Detroit’s Adult. just headlined Jack Rabbits, in Jacksonville, last night, in support of their new album Kissing Luck Goodbye.
Opening the show was Richmond, Virginia’s The Treasury (aka Troy), a one-man-band. He does it all, from composition of the drum machine, to the samples to the synths, while providing live vocals. Looking at his setlist, he mainly played everything from his album Permanent District, including the title track that kicked off the set.
Set in darkness with strobe light effects (which syncs to the beats), The Treasury jumps and kneeled and sweat for his EBM/Industrial music. As he was introducing his “Perception” song, he said that this was his first time in Jacksonville, Florida.
Los Angeles, by the way of Miami, Donzii was up next. This wasn’t their first rodeo. It was their fourth time in Jax, and their second time at Jack Rabbits. The band was highly entertaining, with singer Jenna doing most of the storytelling with her makeup, her clothing choice, her flash of the banana hidden in her trenchcoat. What a weirdo! I love it.
Their music reminds me of a new wave punk band. It’s upbeat, with driving repetitive guitar notes and funky sound… sometime not following Jenna’s vocals (like she’s singing a different song).
I asked their bassist Dennis later why they briefly used a mirror for a prop. Both the bassist and drummer answered, “That’s a Jenna question.” They then offered their own interpretation, you know, it’s like looking at yourself. That’s probably the safe answer.
Really liked Donzii, hope to see them again sometime down the road.
Synth-punk, electroclash duo Adult. (Kuperus and Adam Lee Miller) closed out the night, mainly playing their new songs Kissing Luck Goodbye. They didn’t work with a setlist, so I suspect their set remains the same, or mostly the same night after night.
Comparing their show to their May 2022 and their show with the My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult in Oct 2023 and last night’s show – they were all very different. Well, some things are the same, like the heavy fog machine and the strobe lights.
To be honest, I was kind of looking forward to seeing them utilize Scotch tape into their sound, but they didn’t play that song… so I guess they didn’t need the tape.
If you’re into the synth/cult/electro/industrial sound, you definitely need to check out Adult. Their remaining tour dates are listed below. Be sure to show up early to check out the opening band, you won’t regret it.
