I’ve been to sold out shows at Fine Line in Minneapolis before. But I’ve never shown up fifteen minutes before doors to find myself nearly around the corner in line. It was clearly a super popular show with the fabulous underscores in town, bringing her superb electronic pop sound to an all ages show.

The evening started with umru (aka Jaan Umru Rothenberg), a producer with tons of collaborations including Charli XCX, and a DJ who has released several EPs, including 2025’s Matter of Time. He’s worked with underscores, which always makes for a great opening act, as they know the headliner well. He was on stage solo with a compact disc jockey (an updated turntable machine that can take multiple SD cards or other similar digital memory devices to switch between). The dance beat hit hard, but I was amused when umru ran off stage after the first round of applause, having forgotten some critical cords. Back in time, he could make his transitions and on we went. There was no let up early on and he had the crowd in full dance club mode. It was certainly lit like a nightclub, with the background screen serving to throw occasional flashes of light with images with song lyrics, umru’s name, and more. We got some numbers from Matter of Time and the crowd was chanting along, with many in the audience with light up smiley faces courtesy of the headliner. Lest you think this was easy, umru was busy at the controls, modulating pitch and beat and making those transitions super smooth. Some late, hefty drum beats reinforced the crowd’s dancing and it felt like midnight even before the opener was done. In a flurry of visual and sonic effects, umru closed out and quickly exited the stage.

Headliner underscores is the stage name for April Harper Grey. She’s a tremendous force centered in electronic dance music, but crossing over into hyperpop, with some very singable numbers. With three albums under her belt, including 2026’s U, underscores rightfully has a serious fan base. And with this all ages show, the house was packed like sardines. (The staff passing out water between sets couldn’t move it fast enough.) It started with underscores on video in the green room hallway and moving ever closer to the stage. She finally burst out solo with the EDM backing tracks in full swing and dear reader, This. Was. INTENSE. underscores was all over the stage and simply in constant motion all while singing. And the audience was eating it up, jumping in unison, with the whole floor of the venue shaking. Locals (Girls Like Us) somehow increased the intensity and this evening was not for the weak of heart, and it felt like a furnace near the stage. There was a ton of vocal and musical modulation, as you would expect, but it was always in pursuit of the song’s moment. Poplife was the collaboration with umru and we got a reaction shot from off stage, as we also got that HD camera on stage, putting underscores on the large back screen and turning it to audience, who understandably went ballistic. Did I mention she’s an absolute delight of a performer? Dear reader, she certainly is. The Peace carried that EDM and heavily modulated vocals to the forefront, while Tell Me (U Want It) capitalized on bringing vocals and music as close together to the singularity as possible.

In a brief down moment, underscores noted that the last time she was in the Twin Cities was at Turf Club in 2023, “and there was like 130 people there, so this is like five times that, so thanks”. (Dear reader, that show was also brilliant, and I feel lucky to have caught it.) Del mar county fair 2008 had her behind keyboards and was a nice breather before getting back to the dance groove. Lovefield had the crowd yell out the letters of the title as underscores reveled in the moment before taking over on lyrics. This was perhaps the top moment musically for the evening: emotionally wrought, great backing music, and perfectly played vocally, with the drop bringing the crowd even higher. Do It was visually brilliant, with the screen having two silhouetted dancers almost perfectly the same size as underscores, who took center and the bright backlit screen had them all looking similar. Spoiled little brat was an earlier career number and the crowd was singing every word of the hyperpop song. Wish U Well was a perfect closer to the main set, with heavy EDM beats and underscores killing the lyrics of a toxic relationship. Back on stage, 1-800-F**KOFF was back to the super danceable mode and the audience complied. Finishing up on Music, underscores had given the audience everything they could have hoped for and a workout to boot. My guess is when she returns, it will be to the larger First Avenue and will be a welcome and deserved promotion.
