WHITE HILLS

Opening up the show was White Hills, a rock band from New York with mostly guitarists Dave W. singing, but occasionally their bassist, Ego Sensation, would take over lead vocals. The two seemed really pleased at the large group of fans who showed up early to catch their set.
As expected, The Cult played their Electric album in its entirety… starting off with the sing-along chorus of “Wild Flower”. The great energy between the two original two original band members, singer Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy is great to watch – that is until Astbury seem visibly and vocally upset at the chatters in front and then his mic not carrying his vocals. It was all resolved, but for a moment, you thought he was going to smash his mic out of anger.
After Electric was played (with the exception of “Born to be Wild”, but interestingly “Zap City” was played instead), there was a two minute break. Astbury announced, “don’t worry, we’re coming back to play the hits!” And sure enough, they followed the break with the hits, including their biggest hits “She Sells Sanctuary” and “Rain”.
Not all were “old hits” as Astbury puts it, they did manage to put in a few newer songs, including “Honey from a Knife” and “Lucifer” from last year’s Choice of Weapon album.
As for the encore, there were two songs, “Spiritwalker” and “Sun King”. For the latter song, Astbury finally loosened up, taking off his sunglasses and letting down his hair.
The Cult is currently on their “Electric 13” tour, if you love the album, you need to go see them on this tour, because this may be the only time you will hear songs like “Aphrodisiac Jacket” live.

I didn’t mention it in the writeup because I was really confused at the Guns N Roses references (“Paradise City” after “Zap City”) and perhaps either an Oasis or Beatles reference (“I Am the Walrus”/cuckoochachoo). I think they were comments about not playing “Born to be Wild”, but I didn’t exactly understood what Ian was saying on stage.
I was there in the front row and had the most amazing time – no I was not one of the trouble makers. I can’t believe I missed the tambourine Ian tossed to me. However, John Tempesta (bless his soul) was kind enough to hand me one that Ian bounced off his head earlier (a dream come true). I am still pumped on adrenaline and will probably not sleep for days. I look forward to seeing the guys play for many years to come! They still give one Hell of show. Thanks guys! CFFC
