first-avenue.com

Duluth’s Mary Bue will be in town next Wednesday to promote her latest Holy Bones, the so-called “Best Local Albums of 2015” by the Star Tribune. The vegetarian will likely sing about “mummies, love and candy.”

Local, but sometime Tennessean, Laura Nicholson, is also on the bill.
We previously mentioned her with local Liam Gerard’s show at the Fine Line.

Stacy K to open. Described as “raw, witty and poetic enough to derive a pastoral Joni Mitchell vibe.”

Mary Bue’s tour dates:

Jan 06 7th Street Entry Minneapolis, MN

Jan 14 The Orpheum Theater Hancock, MI

Jan 15 Ore Dock Brewery Marquette, MI

Don’t Think I’ve Forgotten

During the 60’s and early 70’s as the war in Vietnam threatened its borders, a new music scene emerged in Cambodia that took Western rock and roll and stood it on its head – creating a sound like no other.

If you’re into psychedelic surf rock, Dengue Fever will be in town Thursday to Saturday to promote their latest album The Deepest Lake (Tuk Tuk Records) and the film screening of “Don’t Think I’ve Forgotten”, a documentary about Cambodia’s Rock & Roll, at Capri Theater, presented by Ordway Center for the Performing Arts. I believe the screening is free, but on Friday’s screening, be sure to stay until after the film to talk to the band.

Dengue Fever is widely recognized for their trademark blend of ’60s Cambodian pop and psychedelic rock, their music featured everything from Khmer rap, Latin grooves, Afro percussion, to Stax-inspired horns.

The Blind Shake

Closing out the show was headliner Shadow in the Cracks, featuring brothers Jim and Mike Blaha of The Blind Shake. The singer had to sit down during his set because he needed his foot for the bass drum.
THE ANNUAL BLOWOUT

with Blind Shake • Birthday Suits • Ripper

at Turf Club

Saturday, 01/09/16, 7:30pm ($8/$10)

turfclub.net

The year-beginning The Annual Blowout is taking place at the Turf Club this Saturday, January 9th with locals The Blind Shake, Japanese/local duo Birthday Suits and non-metal band Ripper.

The Blind Shake recently won a “Gremmy” with their collaboration with John Reis, for best instrumental album of 2015!
Their upcoming Garbage on Glue/Go Go 78 single will be available for purchase at the January 9th show.

Birthday Suits (not to be confused with Edinburgh’s The Birthday Suit) is a drum/guitar duo. Every time we saw Peelander-Z, the Birthday Suits open up for the band… so we’re assuming they’re old pals.

As previously mentioned, local band Ripper has a common and confusing name. Other bands called Ripper includes the metal (and active) Texas band Ripper or Portland’s Ripper or Chile’s Ripper.

Tour dates:

Jan 09 Turf Club St Paul, MN

Jan 29 Le Bootleg Bordeaux, France

Feb 04 Brudenell Social Club Leeds

Feb 07 The Cluny Newcastle Upon Tyne
