The Japanese House at Fine Line The Japanese House Setlist

Buckinghamshire’s The Japanese House (stagename for singer/songwriter Amber Bain) headlined the very packed Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis on Wednesday, May 1st, in support of her debut album Good at Falling (which came out March 1st, 2019 via Dirty Hit/Interscope Records).
The story behind the name The Japanese House came from Kate Winslet’s Japanese teahouse that her family stayed at in Cornwall, England. Bain pretended to be a boy called Danny, and that weeklong really influenced Bain in her music and she decided to call herself The Japanese House.
Her music career led her to being the support act for The 1975, who invited her on a national tour (her first appearance in Minneapolis was at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium in St Paul on 25 May 2016). With the Fine Line Music Café being her third time here, she seemed quite happy to be back in the area.
Opening the show was North Wales-born, London-based Art School Girlfriend. Like Japanese House, Art School Girlfriend is just the stagename for Polly Mackey… who seemed really quiet and shy throughout her brief and very dark (lightwise) set.
Most of her songs is probably taken from Come Back To Me album, including the title track… which was the second song to play after her first song “Bending Back”.
With the quiet way Mackey sings and the subject matter of her songs, it is best experienced in a very quiet setting. Perhaps listening on headphones, not in a loud environment. She did ended with her danciest/loudest song, “Distance (Blank)”, with the help of pre-recorded beats.
Come Back To Me is available now on Wolf Tone Records, the same label that is responsible for such acts as The Horrors and Glass Animals.
The last time The Japanese House was here, in February 2017, we wrote, “If you look over their setlist, they basically played everything that they’ve ever released among the three EPs … which meant that they actually didn’t have any songs for an encore. The band is still young, so hopefully when they return (with a full album release), that they will upgrade to a bigger venue and a longer playlist.”
Now that her debut album is out, as previously mentioned, Amber Bain suddenly had a lot more songs to play. She still basically played her entire debut album, but throwing in a couple of choice early EP B-sides, including “Sister” – but medley with “Everybody Hates Me”.
The Japanese House’s debut LP Good at Falling is out now on Dirty Hit/Interscope Records.
