Show up early to check out…

Japanese psychedelic band Kikagaku Moyo (Japanese spelling 幾何学模様) sold out the Turf Club in St Paul on November 22nd, 2019.

Opening up the show was Tokyo’s Minami Deutsch (南ドイツ). As one newfound fan noted, “@minamideutsch
killed it last night. Never seen a packed crowd so focused on an opening band. Someone tell @kikagaku_moyo
to give them more than a 45 minute set.”

It’s true, as soon as Minami Deutsch started with their set with “Futsu Ni Ikirenai”, the crowd was completely quiet and paying attention to every note and beat. They just couldn’t get enough of the band. One guy near me, turned around to his friends and said, “I counted four-four-five-four!” He was probably talking about the math rock or drone-like repeating notes. I’ve never seen anyone that excited about a band at a show… it’s clear that this Japanese group won over some fans.

They only played a few songs, but each song is over 10 minutes, and a few were taken from their new EP Can’t Get There.

As with a lot of psychedelic bands (this applies to the headliner), most of their music is instrumental. There are some rare vocals, but it’s often indistinguishable or barely audible with the loud music.

Kikagaku Moyo (Go Kurosawa, Tomo Katsurada, Daoud Popal, Ryu Kurosawa, and Kotsu Guy) closed out the show.
The band’s name translates to “geometric patterns”,

The band started with drummer/singer Go Kurosawa and guitarist/singer Tomo Katsurada in the summer of 2012, as they spent the day busking on the streets of Tokyo as a free music collective. After recruiting Daoud (guitar), Kotsu Guy (bass), Ryu Kurosawa (sitar), the group recorded and released their self-titled debut album on August 20, 2013 via Cosmic Eye/Sound Effect records (based in Greece!).

The band’s current album Masana Temples came out last year on Guruguru Brain. Based on the sold-out show and enthusiast audience, they really have built up quite a local fanbase in Minneapolis/St Paul, since their previous appearance at the 7th Street Entry (in snowy February 2019).
