We are excited to hear that Grandaddy will return to touring in 2025. It is advertised as their first tour in 20 years (the band had to cancel their USA tour when Kevin Garcia unexpectedly died of a heart attack at the age of 41).

I had a flashback moment of seeing the band, which I distinctively remember going to the Triple Rock… but it was at the 400 Bar, which is nearby. The 400 didn’t give me any ticket stub, but the internet tells me it was on July 28, 2000. We even know the setlist, thanks to someone taping the entire concert and posting it online. I did get a chance to hear it, and it’s taking me 25 years back, especially hearing that one guy shouting “woot!” when the first few notes of “The Crystal Lake” started to play. That’s a good song, but I personally like “Hewlett’s Daughter” song much more.

In 2000, Modesto’s Grandaddy was burning hot with their sophomore album The Sophtware Slump was the album to listen to. They were massive in the UK, and we were lucky enough to catch them right before blowing up.

A year later, as you can see from my ticketstub for their headlining First Avenue show on May 9, 2001, the band had sold out the 1,500-capacity venue. Virgil Shaw opened the show. I wish, back then, I would’ve paid more attention to taking notes or other mementos to help remember the shows.

Shaw was from a band called Dieselhed, and he was touring in support of his debut solo album Quad Cities, which came out in 2000, via Future Farmer Records.

Anyway, if you were wondering, yes, Grandaddy was still touring in support of their The Sophtware Slump album. Their next album Sumday didn’t come out until 2003!

As for Grandaddy, this upcoming 2025 North American tour is to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their best album The Sophtware Slump. The tour will features Pedro the Lion (on the first half of the tour) and Greg Freeman (on the second half of the tour, starting in Minneapolis) as support.

We’ve also just heard about Greg Freeman, who simultaneously announced that he’ll be joining Grandaddy on this tour, in support of his upcoming album Burnover (due out August 22 on Transgressive/Canvasback Records).

This tour looks amazing, especially because we haven’t heard The Sophtware Slump live in over 20 years.
