Flashback: Deltron 3030 at First Avenue (Nov 13, 2000)
You guys don’t know how excited I was when I heard that Deltron 3030 have reunited and will be doing a special 25th Anniversary tour. The band first came together in 2000, for their self-titled album, and it was the most unbeatable hip-hop, rap album you’ve ever heard. I was a big fan and saw the band in 2000, at First Avenue. I even bought their instrumental album. The instrumental record was marketed to DJs, who may want to use the background music to mix with other records.

The 2000 show had two opening bands, Ugly Duckling and People Under the Stairs. If my memory is good, I believe prior to Deltron 3030 coming on stage, Kid Koala came on stage to do some live music mixing using his two turntables.
Shortly after Koala’s mix, Dan the Automator came on stage, doing his own thing… and then, skateboarding on First Avenue’s stage was Del the Funky Homosapien with his backpack and ready to go as “Deltron Zero, hero… not no small feat!”
Together, the trio formed Deltron 3030, bringing rap music from the year 3030! For this show, First Avenue, actually extended their stage to give a little catwalk for Del to run up and down the center.
The last time Deltron toured together as a group was in support of their sophomore album Event 2, and we saw them at First Avenue in October 2013, and was blown away by their encore: “The encore was unbelievable, after “Do You Remember”, the band kicked into a song that Dan said, “you all know this one”, as they launched into “Clint Eastwood”. That song made Gorillaz famous, but we all knew this was made by the same people in Deltron, but minus Damon Albarn. That’s okay, the part of Albarn were loudly sung by the audience to a roaring, satisfying finish. I was walking to my car until I saw a group of people outside the First Avenue garage. Apparently, right after the show, Del and Kid Koala were skateboarding in the garage! A few of us handed them our 12″ and they signed the record for us. Unfortunately, Dan didn’t skate so he wasn’t there to sign my album. Dan is pretty active in the music scene, so I’ll catch him at another time (I’ll bring the record to have him finish the holy trinity of signatures).”
So… are you excited for the 25th Anniversary tour yet? The tour kicks off in Vancouver on July 18 and will go down the West Coast until San Diego on July 27. There will be a short break and the tour will resume in Minneapolis on September 24 and will end in New York on October 6.
If you miss them this year, and at the rate they reunite, you may not get to see them until 2035! Guys, it’s going to be inter-spectacular and fantabulous!
