Fallout: Season One (Steelbook)

Based on one of the greatest video games of all time, Fallout is the story of haves and have-nots in a world in which there’s almost nothing left to have. 200 years after the apocalypse, the gentle denizens of luxury fallout shelters are forced to return to the incredibly complex, gleefully weird and highly violent universe waiting for them above.

As a diehard Fallout fan, I have been collecting official Fallout merchandises for years and years. When the Amazon television series was announced in 2024, it was the best thing that could have happened for Fallout collectors. It meant that, for the first time in a long time, we got a ton of official Fallout merchandises, thanks to Amazon’s strong licensing department.

Fallout fans, like myself, was eating well, to say the least. Most of the promised products were released ahead or around the time Amazon dropped the first season of Fallout, in April 2024, so I was very, very happy with my complete set of Fallout Magic Cards (including a few play mats and an official Nuka-Cola Girl binder), Xbox Fallout Game Controller, McFarlane Toys’ Fallout Set, Fallout Gunnar Glasses, and Fallout Hoodie (got lots of compliments on this one whenever I wear it outside), and various other Fallout plastic miniatures and knick-knacks.

There was one item on my Fallout Collection list that I fail to obtain, and that is the Wand Company’s Fallout Pip-Boy (a 1:1 functioning device based on the television show). Let me tell you my sob story.

I first learned about it in March 2024, and pre-ordered it immediately. I thought I would get the Pip-Boy in April, like all the other Fallout merchandise. When April rolled around, I never got the Pip-Boy. Then I found out that the Wand Company only had a prototype and was still working out all the kinks and the Pip-Boy was delayed. Due to the manufacturing process (from China?) and assembly, we didn’t really have a ship date. It was going to be available sometime in May 2025.

The problem, and this is unique to my situation, was that I was in the middle of moving 1,600 miles to Florida, and if they were to ship my Pip-Boy, it would be sent to my old address. So, it was with sadness that I had to cancel my pre-order.

The Pip-Boy 3000 was an upgrade to the Pip-Boy 2000 Mk VI (and a Pip-Boy Bluetooth Speaker Stand). Upgrades includes made of real metal, a working radio (you had to buy a radio module in the previous model), and a working animated screen (which was my biggest complaint about the Pip-Boy 2000).

I thought the Pip-Boy was manufactured to order, so they were only going to produce just enough to fulfill demands, but luckily, I guess because of the price, a few places, like Gamestop, still had them in stock.

When I got the Pip-Boy in hand, I couldn’t believe just how small it is! It is so small that I’ve seen a YouTube video, where the reviewer couldn’t even put it on his bearish arms.

The aluminum stand was very nicely designed. There is a plastic portion which can plug into the Pip-Boy, with a holder for the USB-C connector. It’s a simple design, but it looks great, like the Pip-Boy is floating. Unfortunately, there is only one viewing angle, but no complaints here.

The screen is very small, but clear and viewable. You can change the colors, so the screen is capable of a full spectrum of colors… but I left it as glowing green. The best part about the Pip-Boy are all the custom animations that the Wand Company created specifically for this unit. You can tell they are big fans of the game, and a lot of thought went into each animation.

The other cool thing that people don’t realize is that the Pip-Boy is a real tiny computer built inside. We’re talking CPU and RAM. I’m not sure what kind of O/S it’s running, but I can speculate it’s Linux or Raspberry Pi-type hardware.

There is a radio built-in, but due to the small two-watt speakers, the sound isn’t very loud… let alone use it as an alarm clock. The only cool thing is that there are custom Wake Up songs created for this Pip-Boy. That’s going above and beyond to create music that can only be listened to this device.

I’ve little to complain about this neat toy. I didn’t like the weathering effects, which makes all the Pip-Boy unique, but some people liked it. I was under the impression that the entire Pip-Boy would be made from die-cast metal, but only the enclosure that holds the display is metal. Everything else is plastic.

The Pip-Boy 3000 by the Wand Company is simply the perfect product for Fallout fans, I just wish it wasn’t so expensive. If you love Fallout (particularly the television show), and can afford it, I recommend buying it. I doubt they sold many of these things, but for the few that has one, we appreciate all the love and care and design that went into building the Pip-Boy.

Also consider the Pip-Boy 3000, especially if you missed the re-issues of the Pip-Boy 2000. I missed the opportunity to buy the Pip-Boy 2000 kit and regretted it. Since then, I bought the ’76 colors and Sugar Bomb colors, but I have always wanted the original kit (which is in green).

P.S. The best news is that, because the Pip-Boy’s software can be updated and upgraded, we may see entirely new animations and functions in the future. I hope they release some sort of Holotape attachment or add-on.
