Five finger death punch legacyFIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH
Five Finger Death Punch (aka 5FDP or FFDP) is a heavy metal and hard rock band formed in Las Vegas in 2005 by guitarist Zoltan Bathory and original members including vocalist Ivan Moody. Their name is inspired in part by martial arts folklore and Tarantino’s movie Kill Bill and their groove metal features heavy riffs, melodic hooks, and themes related to struggle, resilience, and military support.

Legacy can take many musical forms,

From a longtime hard-hitting Vegas band to a TX Outlaw Country singer, to even an up-and-coming Motor City band, all striving to make a bigger impression. Those seemingly very different worlds came together as Five Finger Death Punch, Cody Jinks, and Eva Under Fire, made for an entertaining evening at their Kansas City area stop at Morton Amphitheater in nearby Riverside, MO.

While all of the acts are unique enough to forge their own sound and musical path into the genres most associated with them, bringing such divergent sounds to play on the same stage made for a curious and intriguing evening that not only met but exceeded the expected level of entertainment.

Five Finger Death PunchFor Five Finger Death Punch, it’s amazingly been two decades since their Las Vegas beginnings, which is cause enough to go out on a 20th anniversary celebratory tour, but also to promote their latest and tenth studio album, Legacy, released in July via the Better Noise label.

The band’s appeal is their ability to blend muscle rock heaviness with simple but memorable hooks and visually tie in a bit of theater along with some appeal to video gamers (the military-themed film during “De Oppresso Liber” looked amazing) and other segments.

Their connection with their audience is impressive as well- thousands of voices joining a familiar chorus transformed the venue into a shared experience and the band was generous back, to the fans all night.

5 Finger Death Punch 2026 10 03 RiversideMo Morton Amph03Vocalist Ivan Moody literally was emptying his pockets and taking off bracelets to give out, guitarist Zoltan Bathory was of course throwing out picks, crew members came out with t-shirt cannons mid-set, and Moody played an early Santa after grabbing a Christmas-red bag and was handing out more goodies during the encore’s “Sham Pain.”

Their lyrics often carry themes of resilience, frustration, and overcoming adversity, all of which are relatable and there’s no argument against their energetic, emotionally direct, and just plain loud delivery, to help make their point.

5 Finger Death Punch 2026 10 03 RiversideMo Morton Amph07There was some versatility to their performance too- from an authentic Bad Company cover of “Bad Company” (first featured on 2010 album of theirs) to a gentler acapella delivery by Moody on “Far From Home”, Those were in contrast to the in-your-face, volume-goes-to-eleven on anthems like “Burn MF” which had no secondary sublime hidden message.

Visually, we think it was the first time we saw virtual sparks and pyro displays on-screen, in combination with the actual thing, making for an insane pinball machine experience, come to life.

Bassist Chris Kael got a little playful with his brief medley, incorporating Metallica, Papa Roach, and Billy Idol, all within just a few minutes, and drummer Charlie Engen received his solo spotlight around the halfway point. Newish (since 2020) guitarist Andy James played like he’d been in the band for decades and all of the members were generous to the photogs as well as the fans- clearly having fun, posing, and offering up some memorable images.

The group closed with 2008’s “Never Enough” and following, never enough was what the crowd was exactly thinking, clapping and yelling for more, and were rewarded with a three-song encore.

The evening would close with the band’s breakthrough and first single, taking it all back to where it all began- 2007’s “The Bleeding,” still an emotional heartbreaker of a song about Moody separating from both his former band and ex-fiancé. And, with that legacy was achieved, with Five Finger Death Punch highlighting their new songs as well as honoring the older classics.

Maybe the most unlikely opener for 5FDP was TX Outlaw Country singer-songwriter, Cody Jinks, who released his latest full-length, In My Blood, last July on his own Late August Records label. Jinks has a no-frills, straightforward style enhanced by his roughened deep baritone, that makes his songs feel comfortable, authentic, and lived in.

DSC08110Before this genre, Jinks was fronting a thrash metal band in the late 90s, before their breakup and Jinks eventually returned to the music he grew up with, so the rock connection is definitely baked in. He’d been releasing albums for two decades, with the breakthrough coming with 2016’s I’m Not the Devil album, which went to #4 on Billboard’s Country chart.

Jinks acknowledged the genre shift, saying it might be the most Country some in the crowd will hear all year, but he managed to honestly win over the crowd with songs like the personal tender ballad, “Mamma Song” and the Ray Bradbury-inspired “Something Wicked This Way Comes,” complete with a dark carnival virtual backdrop.

The set grew in volume as it progressed, with Jinks showing he could also rock the audience on a slightly Country-fied version of an AC/DC cover. The rock vibe continued into the set-closing 2022 single, “Loud & Heavy”, an outlaw roots stomper that was maybe the epitome of his sound, and which left some ears ringing and memories lingering, as the band waved farewell.

Detroit band Eva Under Fire (vocalist Eva Marie, guitarists Rob Lyberg and Chris Slapnik, bassist Ed Gawlik, and drummer Dave Miller II) got things started on the right foot, with an opening set in support of their new full-length, Villainous, out now as well as the title track single, that was played late into their set.

Eva Under Fire 2026 10 03 Riverside MO Morton Amph04The band plays a blend of alt-rock/metal, engages with the audience and Marie (aka Amanda Lyberg) is a compelling frontwoman whose vocal range is comparable to Evanescence’s Amy Lee.

Starting with the October single “Awakening” about battling personal demons, the band took command of the stage immediately, working both ends and Marie emoting most verses with a hardened passion. A Journey cover mid-set added some levity and the band closed with their 2022 breakout song, “Blow.”
