André Cymone at Capri Theater- Minneapolis MN (2026-10-03) Photos

It was a memorable musical homecoming as visionary multi-instrumentalist, producer, and songwriter André Cymone returned to the Capri stage as part of a welcome hometown visit and was back at the fabled North Minneapolis venue. We caught Cymone live in his previous Minneapolis visits, in 2014, 2017, and 2018.

A 20-year-old Prince played his historic first live concert as a solo artist on January 5 and 6, 1979 there, along with his band at the time- André Cymone (bass), Bobby Z. (drums), Dez Dickerson (guitar), Matt “Doctor” Fink (keyboards), and Gayle Chapman (keyboards).

It was the young Prince Rogers Nelson’s first public live performance after signing a record deal with Warner Bros. Records, and featured tracks from his debut album For You, including “Soft and Wet,” “For You,” and “Just as Long as We’re Together”.

Cymone’s return performance served as the official opening night for Capri 100, a year-long centennial celebration honoring a century of local arts culture and with his full-circle set, Cymone reaffirmed his place as a key developmental co-architect in what would come to be known as The Minneapolis Sound.

In addition to bringing his version of the funk back, in support of new album, The Resurrection of Funk, available now, including the lead single, “Show Me Love”, earlier classics like “The Dance Electric” and several Prince covers kept the sold-out crowd dancing and cheering all night.

Our Purple friend and one of the Cocoa Boys, Frankie Coco managed to forward these photos that documented Cymone’s high-energy set.
