The Mary Jane Girls were an American R&B, soul, funk, and disco girl group formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1979 by singer and producer Rick James. Formed around backup vocalist Joanne “JoJo” McDuffie and the Water Sisters, leading Motown to offer a contract and prompting James to formalize a complete lineup.
