Growing up in the 80s and listening to radio, I can tell you that the first time I heard “Nasty Girl” by Vanity 6, it was the raunchiest, nastiest song I’d ever heard (at that time). Maybe it was a special remix version, but all that moaning and grunting in the song made me blush! Yikes! Rest in peace, Vanity.

Rick James’ nasty girl band Mary Jane Girls had such sexual-innuendo songs in the charts, such as “Candy Man” and “All Night Long”… but it wasn’t until “In My House”, that got them banned on Tipper Gore’s Filthy Fifteen.

As usual, with these censor list, such as The Video Nasty, it’s a great checklist for music fans to track down and add it to their collection.

“In My House” was Mary Jane Girls’ best-charting single and helped got them a gold album award for Only Four You in 1985.

With all their success, trouble with their contracts among the girls and Rick James and Gordy Records (part of Motown Records) caused the band to break up when they were in the process of recording their (unreleased) third album.

Listening to “In My House”, it’s pretty straight-forward that it’s about sex. I mean, how else can you misunderstand “when it comes to making love, I’ll satisfy your ever need…”?

Currently there are two bands billed under Mary Jane Girls, on account of disagreements between band members. Candice Ghant (Candi) bills her group as Mary Jane Girls, while Cheri Wells & Kimberly Wuletich (Maxi) bills under MJG Starring Maxi and Cheri of the Original Mary Jane Girls.
