ABOUT
Sting (born Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner on October 2, 1951) is an English musician, singer-songwriter, actor, and activist best known as the frontman of The Police and as a highly decorated solo artist.

Like slipping on a familiar pair of shoes, Sting has returned to play in a power trio format–

StingThe Sting 3.0 Tour finds the aka Gordon Sumner in a familiar band lineup, but instead of Andy and Stewart; we have longtime guitarist Dom Miller and drummer Chris Maas making up the three-piece, which made a stop in downtown Minneapolis at The Orpheum for a set of two intimate shows.

Sting is now 75 years-young and still spry and energetic for someone of his age (the tantric and yoga exercises must be working out) and with Copeland and Summers suing their bandmate last September for ‘digital exploitation’ and underpaid royalties, there’s likely no chance of The Police reuniting that one last time.

Earlier this year, Sting paid out over $800K to his former bandmates to settle things and he’s already sold off his publishing rights in 2022, so there’s no real urge for any reunion, which is why our resident fan-in-the-stands decided this was the time to cross the singer off his concert bucket list (more motivated than Sting’s last show in town, with Shaggy at the Armory).

Sting 2026 10 13 Mpls Orpheum John RThe show itself is somewhat stripped-down, more so than The Police would have performed it, which gives extra attention to the songs themselves, and the musicianship of each member. Some tunes were sometimes rearranged, but always stayed recognizable and the call-and-response with the crowd, such as on the opening “Message in a Bottle”, proved how timeless so many of those hits (some, a half-century old!), really are.

Sting 2026 10 13 Mpls Orpheum John RHe paid homage to the metro area between songs, both for their resilience during the ICE raids earlier in the year, and for the decaded-long support that began with such early gigs as the classic 1979 show at the long-gone Longhorn. Pre-pandemic, we were slated to see him in the lead of his The Last Ship musical; which had a scheduled run at The Ordway, but post-lockdown, that was never rescheduled.

With this lineup, Sting’s voice and bass can be more in the spotlight and Miller (who’s been with Sting, off and on, for some 35 yrs) was able to shine, more on lesser-known tracks like “Never Coming Home.”The setlist proved to be a good mix of his solo years, mixed with several Police classics, even going back to the earliest days with “Can’t Stand Losing You” and “So Lonely.”

Oct 13 Sting altClosing the main set with The Police’s biggest hit, “Every Breath You Take”, they returned for a two-song encore, which began with that band’s breakthrough smash, “Roxanne”, before finishing on a quieter note, preferring to end his shows with a more tranquil and thoughtful number.

Sting 2026 10 13 Mpls Orpheum John RHe switched to classical guitar for a solo rendering of 1987’s “Fragile”, dedicated to three local residents that fell victim to said raids, for a stark reminder of truly fragile we, and the neighborhood and city around us, can really be.Sting 2026 10 13 Mpls Orpheum Setlist

The evening began with a short set from transcendental singer-songwriter Chance Emerson, in support of full-length, Ginkgo, which was released a few years ago, as well as a handful of more recent singles, including the folk-pop “Doing a Number” which he performed mid-set.

Emerson began with a 1973 Jackson Browne cover (which Browne wrote at 16!) and followed that with a single Emerson released last year, “Plant a Forest”, with its heartfelt chorus, “I’ll plant a forest for you, I’ll do anything to grow with you.”

We called him transcendental because he is supposedly a relative of poet and essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson, maybe giving him a genetic edge when he won the John Lennon Songwriting Award from BMI. A Taiwanese mother helped grow his awareness in that country, which resulted in a sold-out tour there, before his current support slot for Sting.
