Reed KD is an indie folk singer from Santa Cruz, California. At first I thought Reed KD is the name of a band, but I quickly found out that his backing band’s actually called The Armchair Aviators (which I think is constantly rotating members). Anyway, he has a new album called The Ashes Bloom coming out this Tuesday, February 12th, according to the press material.
The CD package is pretty minimalistic, almost everything, sans the cover art, are white with black text. And speaking of minimalistic, the recording of The Ashes Bloom is pretty bare and unconventional: “various closets, bedrooms and living rooms called home”. Still, there is something nice, comfortable, and intimate about these settings.
So let’s talk about some of these songs. The first song, “Road Flares”, starts off quiet enough, before surprising you with a burst of energy of harmonica and faster acoustic guitars.
My favorite songs are the ones with a moral story, such as “Empty Bottles”. It’s quite a sad tale, actually:
Upon return, I’m sorry to have learned
that you’ve moved on and left the city
and moved down south beside the hover mouth
in a studio apartment with your new boyfriend
Your friends say it’s the love
that you’ve been dreaming of
You wished it would be me
but “you had to leave.”
Love’s not meant to be spent waiting.
Although it’s mostly a folky album, it should be noted that there are some interesting programming on “Roll Over” and slide guitars on the bluegrassy “Three Long Years”.
If you want to check out more music, you can hear the whole album on the ecard on Fanatic.
The Ashes Bloom is released on the Dirty Laundry Records label and can be purchased through CD Baby or iTunes.
PS, I noticed the description on his compilation 1999-2003 is silkscreened with different colors so no two are exactly alike, which sounds very cool.
