CHARN at 400 Bar, Minneapolis (09/22/12)

I stopped in the 400 Bar last night to check out Omaha’s Skypiper and Minneapolis’ CHARN.

Skypiper

Skypiper came on stage and said, “We’re Charn!” Then after the first song, singer Graham Burkum confessed they were really Skypiper. I didn’t know their music, but they declared “Wet Feet” as “Swamp Feet.”

The thing I noticed about Skypiper is that they had an accordion. I’m not a fan of the instrument; the music comes off as either cheesy (thank you, Weird Al), or circus-ey. Thankfully the instrument was kept to a minimum.

Skypiper’s last album was a 2011 self-titled release, which you can get on CD with Book.

As for CHARN, three of the band members knew each other as children. They were, at one point, playing music in Nashville. I quote: Tennessee “wasn’t their scene.” You can hear it in their music, it’s loud rock and roll, not at all country (which is the impression I get when I think of Nashville.)

Anyway, I am assuming most of their songs on their set are from their 2009 album, These Sins of Mine. I know for sure they played “Holding Hands” and “Happier Than Me”, both songs appeared on MTV’s Jersey Shore.

Currently, CHARN is writing and recording songs for their next album.

  1. Kyle, when did you slide out of the closet and onto the rainbow rug with Luke!?
    Slap bracelet usefulness. Great analogy.

  2. Hi – My boyfriend Luke and I had a really nice night. Thanks to everyone who came out to support us!

  3. I felt as though the information contained in this review was useful, like a slap bracelet or a vcr rewinder. Did the songs have lyrics and stuff?

  4. This is the greatest, most informative show review I’ve ever read.. Thank you! Now I feel like I was actually there! I TOO share your hatred of the accordion!
