Cymbals Eat Guitars

Headliners Cymbals Eat Guitars walked on stage to the sensual groove of Marvin Gaye’s “I Heard it Through the Grapevine,” a song lead vocalist/guitarist Joe D’Agostino acknowledged
Lunch Duchess

Opening up the show was local Lunch Duchess, featuring Katharine Seggerman as the drummer and singer. Seggerman is also in B.O.Y.F., which we previously mentioned stood

Cymbals Eat Guitars is back in town to support their fourth LP Pretty Years. The band was last seen in town at the 7th Street Entry on 10 October 2016, where we noted, “CEG have a sound and presence made for clubs like the Entry; much of their catalogue is anthemic and fierce, but still have a cool New York strut to them. D’Agostino’s voice is an appealing combination of Mike Ness’ gruff earnestness and Tim Armstrong’s defiant snot. He spits and yells when he wants to like on “Beam” and “Warning” and he slinks it up on my favorite tune “Wish” (a song that also features some serious keyboard action from Brian Hamilton).”

Local Lunch Duchess will open. The last time we saw this band in May 2016, and said that the band was “brand new”… although we also noted that drummer / singer Katharine Seggerman was previously in B.O.Y.F. and White Boyfriend.

Matthew Sweet

My very first concert was for Matthew Sweet, during his “Girlfriend” Tour in 1992. I saw him in Fresno, California, and I believe the venue was the Cadillac Club (I’m almost …

MATTHEW SWEET

at Turf Club

Tuesday 07/11/17 (7pm/$25/Sold Out)

turfclub.net

I’ve mentioned this a few times, but one of my first “real” concert experience was seeing Matthew Sweet during his Girlfriend tour in Fresno, California. I’ve seen Sweet on and off many years later, but you never forget your first time. I was a huge Sweet fan in those days, bought into all the anime-inspired CD singles, loved Super-deformed stuff. Got into Altered Beast (and Son of Altered Beast!), so I know all the songs from that time period.

Anyway, currently, Matthew Sweet is back with a new album, after a six-year hiatus, called Tomorrow Forever (Honeycomb Hideout, through Sony’s RED Distribution). The new 17-song album will be available on CD, double 180-gram vinyl, and digital.

The last time I saw Sweet, at Basilica Block Party 2015, he had The Jayhawks’ Gary Louris to help play his songs – so expect the same kind of local hero appearance at this Tuesday’s show.

Unfortunately, if you haven’t bought your tickets yet, it’s sold out.

Tommy Keene to open. Keene with Ivan Julian was previously in town at the Turf earlier on April 30th.

Thurston Moore Band

We previously mentioned the ex-Sonic Youth band leader Thurston Moore Band when they toured with Chain and the Gang in April 2015. It would seem that the band is finally making…

THURSTON MOORE GROUP

at Turf Club

Wednesday 07/12/17 (7:30pm/$20)

turfclub.net

I’ve seen legendary noise guitarist Thurston Moore in his post-Sonic Youth band called Chelsea Light Moving in March 2013. At the time, I wondered why they didn’t just re-name the band to “Thurston Moore” and maybe Moore and company came to the same conclusion, but shortly after that Chelsea Light Moving tour, they formed the Thurston Moore Group (features bandmate Steve Shelley & Deb Googe of My Bloody Valentine) and went on tour in 2015.

Thurston Moore’s new album is called Rock N Roll Consciousness (Caroline Records).

As of this writing, no opening band is listed…. but Moore has a million songs he can easily play a double or triple set.
