Australian singer-songwriter and musician Hatchie recently stopped by the 7th Street Entry to play a lot of tracks from her debut album Keepsake.
Opening up the show was Chicago’s Deeper. The band is usually a trio (Shiraz Bhatti, Nic Gohl, and Drew McBride), but for their live set, they’re accompanied by an additional guitarist.
The most interesting thing is that the band, besides from the fact that the lead singer sounds like Robert Smith (of The Cure), is that the band loves Minneapolis’ John Maus. They had recently recorded “Bennington” as the B-Side to their fourtcoming Run 7” (due in October via Fire Talk).
Next up was Los Angeles’ Orchin, playing some tracks off their album Serene (including the title track). The group features green-haired frontsman Jeremy McLennan (who was also Australian-born), with currently Nathan Castiel on bass, Hunter Martinez on guitars, and Griffin Kisner on drums.
What is interesting about this shoegazing/dreampop band is that they’ll appear again, but playing as Hatchie’s back-up live band.
Hatchie (aka Harriette Pilbeam) closed out the show. Just a little history on Hatchie, but she started playing bass for Babaganouj and Go Violets in Brisbane, Australia. Although she was still influenced by The Ramones and Tiger Trap, she wanted to “try” something different, and so she wrote “Try” in 2015 and eventually the song got picked up by Triple J Unearthed. The whole journey took her to meet her hero Cocteau Twins’ Robin Gutherie (who remixed “Sure”) and led her to being signed to Double Double Whammy and Ivy League Records.
Hatchie started her set with a couple of tracks from her debut EP Sugar & Spice (“Try” and “Sugar and Spice”). But quickly, after that, she said that she was going to play nothing but new songs from her debut album Keepsake. If you look over the setlist, that’s exactly what she did, save for the penultimate song, “When I Get Out” (from Sugar & Spice)… but it made sense as that would’ve served as part of something like an encore.
