Austin based indie-folk band Wild Child stopped by the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis on Sunday, touring in support of their latest album End of the World (Ranch Records).
San Luis Obispo’s Próxima Parada opened the show, playing songs from their album Kind Reminder (AntiFragile Records).
The last time the band was in town, it was headlining their own show at 7th Street Entry on Feb 25, 2020 (with Stanley as opener) so it’s easy to see that the band had more than enough material to play a nearly one-hour set.
The band seemed jam friendly, with Nick Larson’s laid-back style and attitude, as they sing songs like “So Many Ways to Get Downtown” (a song inspired by Grandma Larson’s quote), and “Begin Again”.
Highlight of their set was for (what I think was announced as) “Pray for Home”, in which near the end of the song, Larson told the story about how he dislocated his arm in tracks and ended up sitting on the sideline and meeting John from Wild Child. That’s how they met and wouldn’t you know it? John came on stage to help the band finish the song out. Apparently, this was the first time the two bands collaborated on this song like this, and based on the good feedback from the audience, I’m sure they’ll repeat this setup again.
They also debut their first-ever Spanish song, which I heard as “No Necesito”
They ended their set with “Musta Been a Ghost” with the keyboard player from Wild Child joining on stage, followed by their finale, “24 Brand-New Hours”.
Wild Child put some thought in their set. Walking on stage to Ennio Morricone’s “The Good the Bad and the Ugly” theme song was just Kelsey Wilson and Alexander Beggins. Kelsey announced, “let’s do an old one!” as they played “Pillow Talk”. It’s a fan-favorite, as you find out when Kelsey would just let the audience finish her chorus.
Then the “The Good the Bad and the Ugly” theme song played again, as their newest band member, John Calvin Abney, walked on stage. This is interesting, because Kelsey and Alexander admitted that they needed a third songwriter (that’s John), because they would just write depressing songs. John brought a new, fresh approach to their songs, so they are grateful to have John as part of their songwriting family.
After “Sleeping In” was played, the “The Good the Bad and the Ugly” theme song played again, to introduce the bassist and keys. Kelsey explained that this was the first time they used Morricone’s song as a walk-on music. They previously used “Special Victims Unit”, but that was weird. They’re still debating the perfect walk-on music, so expect another song on the next show.
They closed out the show with “End of the World”, a fitting song to describe the last few years of COVID, and also the title track of their latest album End of the World, available on Ranch Records.
