Pittsburgh’s The Ghost Club is currently touring in support of their forthcoming album, King Whatever (the album is set to release on April 26 via Last Gang Records). This was the band’s first time in Minneapolis, although singer Domenic Dunegan mentioned that members of his bands have been here numerous times. According to Dunegan, the band’s manager urged against coming here. But now that the band is in town, they seemed to be enjoying the city and its offering.

While the focus is certainly on Dunegan, he mentioned that he is nothing without his band, which included guitarist Isaiah Ross, bassist Logan Casper, drummer Christian Laliberte, and, their secret weapon, saxophonist Jake Barber. The sax adds a different energy to the punk/DIY band.

Based on their music and audience, you would think the band was influenced by the Ramones or the Strokes, but apparently Dunegan wanted The Ghost Club to become a “modern Bruce Springsteen.”

The fanbase was young, probably no one over 25 was at the show. It’s a good sign that their music is reaching younger audiences, as they’re more than happy to dance and help promote their music on their socials.

Los Angeles-based alternative artist Fuller (aka J.P. Welsh) was the touring support for The Ghost Club. I personally thought he stole the show. You see, his set was more like a fully realized show, in three acts. First, the school principal came on stage to introduce Fuller. He said that the regular school teacher is sick, but that our substitute teacher was Fuller. Unfortunately, he’s running late, and in order to get him onstage, he asked us to text him (obviously this is designed to get your phone number for future Fuller promotions).

After a great introduction, Fuller is on stage, doing his Teacher Rock thing, songs from his debut album Lowlife. Then he took acid and underwent a strange transformation. Out went the suit and tie, and in came the dad bod with his bathrobe. It was a lot of fun, especially when he’s interacting with the audience by dancing or singing on the dancefloor.

I don’t know when Fuller is coming back to Minneapolis, but sign me up the next time he’s in town.

Also on the bill was local musician, JØUR. I’ve been interested in checking her out, ever since we announced that she was the support act for Cold War Kids in March 2017. Her set included brand new songs like “Trouble” (she was nervous as she’s never played the song live before), to old songs like “Wanderlust”.

The brief 30-min ended with “American Nightmare.”
