Suede: Coming Up (30th Anniversary)

■ SuedeSuede (known as The London Suede in the United States) is an English alternative rock band formed in London in 1989. They played a major role in starting and shaping the 1990s Britpop movement.
If you’re like me, you probably missed Suede’s Coming Up 20th Anniversary and 25th Anniversary… so I guess third time’s the charm with the 30th Anniversary – 5CD Deluxe Gatefold Set.
I’ll be perfectly honest, I’ve fallen off the Suede train since 2000, so I have not kept track of their album(s) or anything. It’s also largely because they haven’t really toured America in ages. I’m pretty sure they did not play America from 1998 to 2022 (when they co-headline the Manic Street Preachers). They just don’t have enough fans or demand in America.
I’ve seen Suede back in the heydays, during their first tour and for the Dog Man Star tour – I was there! After party and backstage!
I’ve got their autographs, including Bernard Butler. Like I said, I love the band, but just haven’t really kept up with them.
So, the new 5CD set is out now (September 25, 2026), and comes with a 20-page booklet, and retails for about $50. It’s too bad that I can’t find it in stores in America. I’m almost certain, due to the “London Suede” name, they are unlikely going to release the album in America. They’ve never been popular in America, so I’m not surprise. You can get a digital copy of it, which I was able to stream it via Amazon Music for free.
Since I was already a fan, I had most of these songs as B-Sides from the various singles Suede released during that 1996-1997 time period. I had them all, so it was pretty familiar revisiting “Sadie” and “The Sound Of The Streets” (another song about Sadie). I didn’t listen to everything, as it’s not really one of my favorite Suede albums. You see, this was the first album that Richard Oakes took over as chief music songwriter (with Brett Anderson providing the lyrics)… so the music just took time to adjust. There’s some good licks, I liked “Trash” (we’re traaaassssssshh) and “Beautiful Ones” (here they come – the beautiful ones!).
It’s fun to re-visit Coming Up. The second discs are all Steven Wilson 2026 stereo mix, which is exclusive to this 30th Anniversary release – and you know what? It sounded really good! I prefer the new mix, but I’m sure purists won’t agree.
So yeah, it’s probably not worth the $50 asking price… but if you’re a super fan, this should be in your collection.
